Jamir Barnes – Monmouth University (Football)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Monmouth, Army, Wagner, Albany, Morgan State
Reasons for choosing Monmouth: “What really was different about Monmouth was the coaching staff. When I got there, I kind of fell in love with the coaches and the running back coach Sam Dorsett. He really made me feel like that was the place I needed to be, and it felt like home when I first got there.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level? “I got my first offer my sophomore year to Morgan State, and that’s when I knew I had the potential to go somewhere to a big school. I just knew I always had to stay on top of my grades and everything else.
“(The recruiting process) was kind of hard because I built relationships with all the coaches that recruited me. It just came down to Monmouth because Sam Dorsett made me feel like it was really home.”
Coach Ryan Nase says: “Jamir has been a difference maker since he was a sophomore. It was obvious the football talent he had, but what I don’t think enough people understand is he had the amount of opportunities he’s had not just because of what he does on the football field but the way he takes care of business off the field too. He’s a 3.0 GPA, a 1000 SAT score, so those numbers are what he’s earned, and a lot of guys think so much of getting that offer is about what you do on the field, who you know and what school you go to, and sometimes that helps, but the 3.0 and 1000 was as important as anything else he did to get this Division I scholarship.
“Last year when our journey to the state championship really began, Jamir was our leading rusher and receiver as well as playing a ton of cornerback, so he really did a lot of everything. This year we had some other guys step up, particularly at the receiver position, so he wasn’t used as exclusively, but when he did get the ball in his hands, he was able to make things happen. From the first game of the year when we played Council Rock South all the way to when we played Archbishop Wood – when number three went in the slot, people knew.
“Jamir is a quiet, more reserved guy, so he’s not necessarily a vocal leader, but he is definitely more of the lead by example. He brought us that first bit of legitimate attention because of his offers this past season and his performance last year. Luckily, that propelled us into doing what we did this year.”
