Lucy MacKenzie – Ramapo College of New Jersey (Field Hockey)

Major:  Biology/Pre-Med

Final list of colleges:  Ramapo, Vassar, Christopher Newport

Reasons for choosing Ramapo:  “When I met coach (Jennifer) Tafro and the rest of the team, it just felt like home to me, and I meshed with them better than any other team. Ramapo is also the perfect size and distance and offers everything I am looking for academically.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in field hockey at the collegiate level?  “I started thinking about playing in college when I was a freshman and started club field hockey. I started going to recruiting tournaments and emailing coaches, but the kind of school I wanted to go to completely changed from freshman to junior year.”

Coach Tabatha Gilbert says:  “One of Lucy’s biggest strengths was her eagerness to learn and try new things. She was always a leader on the field because she just did it. She didn’t tell other people what to do – she just did it and showed it. She was a midfielder, so she always had energy. She’s that bubbly, always energetic, running here, smiling there kind of personality. She’s inclusive with everyone.
“Lucy was also one of the leaders for our unified track team. She helped start that whole program at our school. That’s her character. She’s the most positive person. When it was my first year coaching and she was a freshman, Arcadia’s coach was practicing on our track and said, ‘Oh Lucy – I’d love to get my hands on her.’ She already knew her from a clinic. It was her personality and effort that stands out more than anything else.”
