Nicole Rounsavill – Colgate University (Softball)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges:  Colgate, Princeton, Fairfield, Villanova

Reasons for choosing Colgate:  “The deal breaker was when I went there and saw the whole campus. It was just beautiful – it was everything that I was looking for in a campus. They have a great softball program on top of that, and they have a great school. It was everything I was looking for.
“Coach Joe (Garvey) has been a great influence on my softball career, and I’m really excited to go play for coach (Melissa) Finley and coach (Tara) Tembey.

What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level?  “I started thinking about it eighth grade going into freshman year of high school because that’s when I started playing for Joe (Garvey) for Rock, and that’s when the whole recruiting process started. That’s when we started to be exposed to coaches and tournaments where college coaches would come and watch us play.
“I also wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today without my CrossFit trainer, Matt Giordano, who helped me rehab from an elbow injury.”

Newtown Rock coach Joe Garvey says:  Nicole has been with us probably as long as anybody has. We brought her over as a rec all-star when she was 12 years old. Her dad was coaching, and we became best of friends. They’re a great family, absolutely the best family I’ve been around. Probably what’s kept me coaching is running into people like this.
“Nicole is quite the player. As a student and as an athlete, she’s what you’d call the whole package. She’s a tremendous student, and she does tremendous community service work. Nicole has a humble confidence. She’s a little like Mike Schmidt was with the Phillies. She leads on the field.
“Nicole does CrossFit, and she’s a physical specimen. She’s easy to coach – she accepts criticism, and she wants to get better. Anybody in athletics – if you want to get better, that’s what is going to take you. She has done everything, and right now she’s about the best hitter I’ve ever coached, and I’ve coached some good ones. Defensively, she’s got great fast feet, and she’s strong, but she can hit. Some seniors think they’ve already made it. Our goal is to be junior ready, so then your freshman year is not so bad in college. She really, I believe, will have a tremendous freshman year because of it. She’s totally ready for college in all aspects.”
