Hannah Binder – Bryn Mawr College (Basketball)
Major: Undecided
Reasons for choosing Bryn Mawr: “I wanted to keep playing basketball and get a good college education too. I loved the campus environment, and the team and I felt it was the right fit for me.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in basketball at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about playing in college during my ninth grade AAU season. I’d always wanted to keep playing in college, and I had a lot of colleges reach out to me through AAU and high school basketball, and one of them was Bryn Mawr.”
Coach Blair Klump says: “Hannah is the first four-year player I have seen come through our program as she was a freshman my first year on staff as an assistant coach. Jenna (Culp) came in as a transfer, so Hannah is the first person I have seen in that four-year cycle, and she had a really strong career for us. She played in all possible 90 Varsity games in her four-year stint and started over 75 percent of them. I also do not recall her missing a practice, so in terms of availability, she was always available. Hannah grew as a player and a person in our four years together and is so well-rounded as a person.
“She went from someone who did not say anything, literally almost anything, her first two-and-a-half years with us to a Captain this year, and she really thrives in being vocal with girls in smaller breakdown groups and things of that nature. Everyone leads differently, and to see her find her niche as a leader and use her voice to help others, especially younger girls, was really good to see. She’s very smart in the classroom, maintains a rigorous course load and graduated with a 3.95 GPA. She took her role as a student-athlete very seriously and also factored it into her decision to when choosing Bryn Mawr. She wanted a school that fit her needs both as a student and a basketball player. She had some interest from some other schools, including Widener and Lycoming- two schools with strong programs, but Bryn Mawr was the top of her list, and when she got accepted, it kind of was a no brainer in checking all of the boxes on her wish list.
“One thing that is interesting about Hannah that many people don’t know is she plays a musical instrument (one year she came from playing at graduation and then came to a doubleheader summer league game), so it speaks to how well rounded she is which will also bode well for her future. We also found out one year during a team building activity she writes and composes her music. I think a lot of times it is easy just to get wrapped up in the sports aspect of things, but I try to take an interest and inventory of all my girls’ interests, schoolwork, etc., and it’s been really rewarding for me as a coach. Basketball-wise it is easy to look at her junior year and think she peaked. I do not think she peaked. I think she had a really strong year as a junior - all league, double-doubles, great versatility some AAU recognition...now you are on people’s radar, higher up on the scouting report - a different focus is paid towards you and that’s where the PPG average may take a hit, but she still had some really good games for us this year - Lansdale Catholic and New Hope-Solebury really come to mind in terms of showing her all-around versatility. And I think that will be her biggest strength at the next level. She can play on the block, play out of the high post, she can face up and go by a big, she can pick and roll or pick and pop, she brings a lot of versatility to the offensive end of the floor.
“There are a lot of people that played a role in Hannah’s success and helping her get to this step- first and foremost, she worked hard. Her parents obviously played a huge role, my asst coaches (Heim, Hofstaedter, Dingui, Boyd) and Jason Rapp showed a lot of trust in her early in her career. Two other people who deserve mention are Kari Cairone for UM Heat and Jesse Krasna, Pure Skills Hoops Training and CR North boys’ coach. They are two local people who I have a tremendous amount of respect for - as coaches and as people- and they put a lot to of time and effort into Hannah’s development and growth as a player. I think I can speak for everyone associated with Hannah when I say we are proud of her and look forward to watching her career at BMC.”
