Jalen Griffin – University of San Francisco (Golf)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: University of San Francisco, Purdue, North Carolina State, University of San Diego, James Madison
Reasons for choosing the University of San Francisco: “I have always wanted to go to a city school. I lived in a city – I grew up in Philadelphia, and I lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., for a while, so I’ve always liked the whole city atmosphere. I never wanted to be in a school that was far away from the city. San Francisco is an amazing city, and I have family there as well.”
What was the progression that led you to play golf at the collegiate level? “Most of the kids that I play golf with started playing when they were five years old. I didn’t really start until I was 12. I went to Cape Cod for a summer, and all they had was the beach or golf course. I picked up golf and got really hooked on it, and the next year I started playing tournaments. When I was 15, I kept practicing and practicing, and I started placing better in tournaments. I started thinking, ‘Maybe I should play in college.’ It just progressed from there and got to here.”
Coach John Shapcott says: “Jalen was a total team player. He’s had the chance to speak about himself because golf is a very individual sport, but he’s all about the team. San Francisco is very lucky. They’re getting a team player with great ability on the golf course.
“His game is very simple. He doesn’t try to do too much. Fairways and greens and make some putts.”
