Casey Comber – Villanova University (Cross Country)
Major: Finance
Final list of colleges: Villanova, Georgetown, Penn State
Reasons for choosing Villanova: “It’s a great place for me academically, and I also really like the coach – he’s a great guy who I know I’ll be successful with.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in cross country at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about it my junior year. I made a big progression, and I pretty much knew I was going to run in college.”
Coach Russ Coleman: “Casey is an extremely hard worker, but one of the things in coaching Casey that we’ve always appreciated about him – not only is he someone who’s focused on exactly what he wants to achieve, but he’s always thinking about his team, he’s always thinking about his teammates and bringing others along.
“When Casey first came out as a freshman, one of the things we first noticed about him was he was extremely competitive. Over his freshman to his junior year, he just improved every season dramatically because he just kept growing and growing and growing. A lot of people his junior year were wondering – where did this kid come from? That was his year where he really started to come into his own. Did we know Casey would qualify for Foot Lockers? No, but did we know he was going to have the opportunity to really achieve great things? Yes. How great we didn’t know, but from the very beginning, he’s been all in. It was about time, it was about experience.
“You see his resume – he’s a Foot Locker finalist, he’s an All-American in winter track, he’s a state medalist, he’s the course record holder here in cross country. The list just goes on and on and on. He’s a special athlete.”
