Gabby LeGendre – Wilmington University (Soccer)
Major: Undecided
Final list of schools: Wilmington, West Chester, IUP, Shippensburg
Reasons for choosing Wilmington: “It was a lot different from the other schools. It was smaller, and I loved the campus.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate soccer? “When I was 12, I was playing for a travel team, and I just decided – this is the sport I want to pursue. I just really love it.
“I started e-mailing coaches the summer between my freshman and sophomore years. I started off with a bigger list, but when I narrowed it down, I only had a few schools.”
Coach Ryan Larkin says: “For her first three years, she actually played in the field for us, and she was one of the better field players. Without complaint, she would play in the field and do everything she could do. It was really a disservice to her because she should have been first team all-league goalkeeper the three years she was here, but because she sacrificed for the team, she didn’t get the recognition that she so deserved. Our team will do whatever we can to win, and she embodied that.
“This year we started the season with her in the field again with no complaint from her. Then our goalkeeper dislocated her shoulder, and Gabby went right in without missing a beat. She did whatever we asked her to do, which is always her attitude. In one game this year, a team scored against us late to go up by one goal. We pulled her out of goal, and she came in and scored the tying goal to force it into overtime. Then we put her back in goal so she could secure the tie for us. She scored two goals for us in about five minutes of playing time in the field.
“She’s awesome. She’s fully committed to everything she does. She is energetic, strong and aggressive. She’s just a phenomenal kid, always with a smile on her face and never complained about anything.”
