Colleen McCabe – Lock Haven University (Field Hockey)
Major: Athletic Training
Final list of colleges: Lock Haven, University of Massachusetts Lowell, West Chester, Temple
Reasons for choosing Lock Haven: “Field hockey is one of the top reasons – they have a really good program. The campus is just really nice, and it’s a smaller school. I wasn’t really looking for a city school.”
What was the progression that led you to playing field hockey at the collegiate level? “At the end of ninth grade, I started thinking about it, but I really didn’t get serious about it until my junior year because that’s when I joined the Mystics club team.”
Coach Kaitlyn Rauchut says: “Colleen was a three-year varsity player. She was a forward most of her career, but she played everywhere. We were a very, very young team this year. We only had three seniors, and Colleen was one of them, so she had to really step up and help the younger players learn how to play at the varsity level.
“No matter where she is on the field, she has great field vision. She’s the type of person who’s always thinking ahead. She knows how to distribute the ball, she knows how to score, and she knows how to make other players better. She’s very coachable. She’s an outstanding athlete. She’s very quick, and she’s just an all-around player.
“This year she learned so much about the game, and I’m so proud of her. To play at the Division One level shows how much she’s grown over the past four years. I’m so excited for her. She played club ball for the Mystics in the offseason, which has helped her advance her game even more because she was playing with all those other players who’re going Division One. She’s just a great player.”
