Ginny Moore – Colgate University (Field Hockey)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Colgate, Lafayette, St. Joseph’s, Syracuse
Reasons for choosing Colgate: “I went into the visit saying, ‘I’ll just look at this college,’ but after my visit with the coach, I just absolutely fell in love with the college. She set up the whole itinerary for the day. I went to a class with a freshman girl, I had lunch with them, and she gave me a tour. But after talking to the coach, she said, ‘What made us like you at tournaments was we could see that you love the game in how you played.’ To me, that was important. Some coaches can say, ‘You have a good hit,’ or ‘You score a lot of goals.’ Those are the easy things to pick out of a player, but the fact that it mattered to her mattered a lot to me. When she said that, I thought, ‘This is the way I want to be coached.’ I just fell in love with it after that.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate field hockey? “I have been playing hockey my whole life. This is my 10th year with my Mystx club team. I wasn’t really thinking about playing in college in middle school. In high school, it came as second nature – of course, I’ll be playing in college. I want to keep playing as long as I can. If I can, I want to coach field hockey. I never want to leave the sport.”
Coach Casey Hughes says: “Ginny has a great personality, and her personality is contagious. She was a leader and one of our captains, and that contagious, energetic and spunky personality just trickles to all the different players from seniors on down to the freshman that were involved with the program. In that manner, she’s just a great leader, and she can get people energetic and enthusiastic about the most mundane and simple drill that we’re doing.
“She was our second leading scorer with 13 goals and 13 assists. She had great stick skills, and she has good speed. She’s also very defensive. She plays defense on some of her club teams, so as a forward, she was getting back and helping that transition ball up the field. She was one of our strikers on corners. We could rely on her to get the ball in the cage.”
