Carley DiGiuseppe – Bloomfield College (Softball)

Major: Nursing

Final list of colleges: Bloomfield, Rosemont, Goldey-Beacom, Holy Family

Reasons for choosing Bloomfield: “One of the most important reasons I was so interested in Bloomfield is because they have a great nursing program, which is a career path I’m very interested in pursuing. When I visited the campus and met with the coach, he made me feel really comfortable and eager to learn more about the school as a whole, which has the right atmosphere to make me feel that’s where I belong. Plus, being close to New York City is really cool.”

Favorite softball memory: “I really loved the Myrtle Beach and Florida trip, but one of my favorite memories is the Hatboro-Horsham game my sophomore year when I doubled in the game-winning run. I remember being really happy and Mady Volpe and my other teammates running onto the field to hug me. It was really great.”

Most important thing learned at North Penn: “North Penn softball taught me leadership and has given me the determination to not give up when things get hard. It’s also helped me grow as a person throughout the years.”

Coach Rick Torresani says:  “In her sophomore season in 2019, Carley started the season as our DP and worked really hard. By the middle of the season, she earned the right to play right field on a very competitive team. She worked so hard that by the end of the year she made first team all-league while hitting .323. In a crucial game at home against Hatboro-Horsham, it was a 0-0 game in the bottom of the seventh, and Carley got the game-winning hit. Hatboro, at the time, was undefeated. Carley is a hard worker. She goes to Relentless Athletics and lifts weights all the time. Her hitting instructor has highly recommended her to me, and she plays on a very competitive travel team out of Newtown. This year we’re counting on Carley to continue her hard work and help us reach our team goals. Carley has the talent to be first team all-league again in a very competitive and maybe the state’s best conference for softball. Bloomfield College is the perfect fit for Carley, and I can see her making an immediate impact on the softball program. I’d like to congratulate Carley.”

Mady Volpe – Coastal Carolina University (Softball)

Major: Business

Final list of colleges: Coastal Carolina, Monmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Liberty

Reasons for choosing Coastal Carolina: “I chose Coastal Carolina because in eighth grade, I remember walking onto the campus and going to my first camp there. I went with my father, I looked at him and said this was the school I wanted to go to. The coaching staff is amazing, the team environment and just the culture there is something no other school could beat.”

Favorite softball memory: “It was my 26-strikeout game against CB West. That was my favorite moment by far. Not just as a personal accomplishment but also for the team. The defense behind me was just amazing and the support and obviously the hitting too.”

Most important thing learned at North Penn: “North Penn softball has taught me a lot, and one of the most important things I’ve taken out of it is the team culture aspect and the family aspect. We treat everyone as family members, and we’re always there for each other, no matter what. Especially during the pandemic, we all came together – we had talks, and we had Zoom calls, which was really important. Another thing is the work ethic. I think every single year I’ve played for North Penn we’ve had workouts all year round, which is something I don’t think any other program in the state could say that they’ve done.”

Coach Rick Torresani says:  “I’ve been coaching softball 28 years (20 at North Penn), and Mady Volpe is the best softball player I’ve ever coached - she’s just amazing. Mady is a highly motivated and elite athlete. She has done some amazing things in two years at North Penn. This year Mady will be our captain. In two years, Mady’s overall record is 38-6. She has pitched two no-hitters, including one in the state playoffs. In 2019, she led the state in strikeouts with 266 and has a career total of 418 strikeouts. Her ERA in 2019 was 1.13, which is one of the lowest in the state. In a league game in 2019, she pitched 11 innings while striking out 26 hitters. That’s just an awesome accomplishment. Mady has made first team all-league both her freshman and sophomore years. In 2019, she was named first team all-state and was the Intelligencer Softball Player of the Year. At North Penn, she was voted female athlete of the year in her sophomore and junior years, and in her junior year, she didn’t play one game – that’s how respected she is at the school. Working with her team, Mady has led our softball program to two consecutive Continental Conference championships, one district final, two state quarterfinals, and she helped win the 2019 Philadelphia Phillies Carpenter Cup championship. Just recently, the softball web site ExtraInningSoftball named Mady one of the top 100 players in the country, finishing as the 72nd player. Mady has worked very hard to achieve these records, and I think the Coastal Carolina University softball coach said it best: ‘You won’t find many pitchers that work harder and want it more than Mady.’ I could not have said it better. Congratulations, Mady.”
