Reasons for choosing IUP: “I really liked the team and the campus.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level? “I grew up playing sports and I really couldn’t imagine stopping, especially now.”
Coach Heather Mellow says: “Kelly is a fantastic young woman besides being an outstanding athlete. She is probably least known for her skill set on the lacrosse field and is probably more well known as the kicker for the North Penn football team where she earned third team all-league honors last year as a junior.
“Kelly’s sophomore year she did track and field and lacrosse. She would go to practice about a half hour prior to lacrosse practice, and in that minimal amount of time, she walked away with third team all-league honors in the shot put, second team all-league in the discus and was ninth in the district, which is impressive.
“Her sophomore year in lacrosse, she led our jayvee team with 30 goals with just raw talent. Fast forward a year to her junior year. I think maybe she had catch with her brother in the backyard, I’m not sure, but she came and was a much improved player. She earned herself a spot on the varsity team and started the majority of the season. She finished the season with 13 goals and five assists, and I’m not sure if it was (her) sophomore or junior year, but I think that was the point where she figured ‘I can take this to the next level. I can play this in college.’ This past summer, I had the pleasure of being able to coach Kelly in a club program, and I am very excited to see her this spring and showcase her improved skill set on the lacrosse field. Her stick skills, her shot, her game sense, it’s up there right now, and I think she’s going to be a threat to our opponents. IUP has to be extremely excited to get her since she’s just getting started in the sport. She’s a great athlete, a great competitor and a true leader, and she’s going to do awesome up there. I can’t wait to see her.”
