Jovanna Alfonsi – Philadelphia University (Softball)

Major: Pre-med

Final list of colleges:  Philadelphia University, Bloomsburg, Shippensburg

Reasons for choosing Philly U:  “I chose Philly U because I love their pre-med program and their athletic program. I love how they run their sports – they don’t take conditioning lightly, so you’re always in shape. I like that it’s in the city, and it’s not too far from home. I love the school.”

What was the progression that led you to playing softball at the collegiate level?  “I decided to play softball in college because I love the sport. I’ve been playing since I was six years old, and it wouldn’t feel the same without playing it.”

Coach Rick Torresani says:  “Jovanna is a three-year starter for North Penn. This year she’s our captain. When we were going for a district (title) and into the state playoffs in 2013, she happened to get hurt in the middle of the season and had a concussion, and I think that really hurt us as we entered into the state playoffs.
“Last year she was a leader as a catcher, and I really believe Jackie Bilotti - who has won all-league first team for two years as a pitcher and was the Intelligencer Player of the Year for two years – without Jo behind the plate I’m not too sure Jackie would have gotten it done. That’s the kind of leader Jo is.
“This year we’re counting on her to pick up the slack for some of our power. Last year in the Parkland game that we won 2-1 and Parkland went on to win the state championship – Jo had a walk-off home run to win the game. We’re counting on her this year, and I know she’s going to come through. She plays softball year round on a very quality team from the Chester area where they go to Florida, South Carolina and California. She’s very intelligent. She’s very committed to the game, and she’s showing the other kids on the team what commitment means, and that’s huge for us as coaches. She’s going to be an extension of the coaching staff this year as captain, and I’m looking forward to coaching her and having her take us to what our goals are.”
