Ella Brown – Holy Family University (Basketball)
Major: Physical Therapy
Final list of colleges: Holy Family, Arcadia, Stevenson, University of Scranton
Reasons for choosing Holy Family: “I chose Holy Family because of the academics and athletics as well as the amazing coaching staff.”
Coach Jason Rapp says: “When I got to Pennridge three years ago, she was one of the best players then, and the one thing that I thought was really awesome was the way she just progressed in her roles. She was the second leading scorer when Katie (Yoder) was there and was a really good player and made all-league, but she probably didn’t get as many shots as she could have. She never complained – just kept working and playing.
“Last year the record of our team was probably not what she wanted, but it never affected the way she played. The one thing – and I said this to her – she always made the right play. She got 16 shots a game, which is a lot in high school, but if you watch the film and you watch her play, it’s in the context of the offense. If there’s an open teammate, she makes the extra pass.
“Scoring a thousand points in high school is unbelievable. I don’t care what league you’re playing in, that’s quite an accomplishment, and to do it in our league, she deserves it, and she worked hard, and I’m sure she’ll continue to work hard. It was really a little nerveracking in the PW game (the last game of the season) – she was one point away from breaking the record for most points in program history, and time’s awasting. There were a couple possessions where she could have tried to force a shot to get the record, but she still made the right play. Things worked out where she was able to get it, but it says a ton about her. That’s a mature thing to do as a high school player, and that’s what made it fun coaching her. I was really happy for her. She was a great teammate, a great leader. Holy Family is lucky to have her. I think she’s got a chance to be a good college basketball player.”
