Matt Firuta – East Stroudsburg University (Track & Field)

Major:  Physical Education & Health Sciences

Final list of colleges:  East Stroudsburg, Lehigh, Bucknell, Bloomsburg

Reasons for choosing East Stroudsburg:  “I really liked East Stroudsburg because the coaching staff took a deep interest in me, and I really felt like I connected with the guys I met there. It had the perfect major. They made the recruiting process really easy for me, and I think it will be the best fit.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “It started my freshman year running high school track. I started off as a football player, and I wanted to play college football. Working with coach Hosier and just the experience I had at Pennridge really made me fall in love with the sport, and I didn’t want to do anything else in college. I wanted to run. I stopped playing football and started running fulltime.”

Coach Bob Hosier says:  “Matt lettered as a freshman in our tough SOL Continental Conference, and as a sophomore, he was part of our winter track 4x200 that unexpectedly earned a medal at the state championship meet. He missed his entire junior winter and spring track seasons due to an injury from another sport, but he returned with a vengeance during his senior year to help our 4x200 team to another unexpected medal at the state indoor championships. In the spring season, he qualified for the district meet and became part of the top five 200 runners in Pennridge history. He also was a main cog in our 4x100 team that was first team all-league and qualified for the state meet 4x100 and set a new school record.  Matt was one of our team captains and provided great leadership. He will be attending East Stroudsburg, which is a perfect fit for him in academics and track.”
