On Monday, Nov. 14, 2022, Pennsbury senior Taylor Mays was recognized for committing to continue her soccer career at Rider University.
Taylor Mays – Rider University (Soccer)
Major: Undecided
Reasons for choosing Rider: “I was considering a lot of schools, but my family basically grew up at Rider. My brother goes to Rider, and my brother – who is on the wrestling team - and I are best friends, so, of course, having him there was a big plus to go there. Rider is 20 minutes from my house, and my family is extremely close, so having them able to come to my games and still supporting me and knowing they’re close really helps. The environment at Rider, the small school – it’s everything I wanted in a college. I met the coaches – I love the coaches, the players. Everyone is amazing. I’m so excited, and I cannot wait to go there.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level? “I’ve always competed at such a high level at such a young age, so I knew I wanted to continue it and go to college and pursue it as far as I can. My parents got me interested in a bunch of sports, but soccer was my main passion. Ever since then, I’ve played at the highest levels, and I think it’s helped me commit D-1.”
Coach Kaitlyn Battiste says: “Taylor is an exceptional soccer player with a knack for finding the goal. She made a name for herself in her freshman campaign, leading the team with 13 goals and then matching that number in an abbreviated Covid season, and ending her career in third place all-time of Pennsbury goal-scorers with 42. Taylor's passion and love for the game was most prevalent in big games when the pressure was on. From the sidelines, you could see the excitement in her eyes and the largest of smiles as she loomed closer to the goal in crucial moments. In the end, Taylor's goal-scoring and 1v1 abilities earned her respect across the league and Southeastern PA, accumulating multiple honors over her career.”
