On Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, Pennsbury seniors James Schaffer and Charlie Cordisco were recognized for committing to play baseball at the collegiate level.
Charlie Cordisco – St. Thomas Aquinas University (Baseball)
Major: Undecided possibly finance/business
Final list of colleges: St. Thomas Aquinas, Siena, Monmouth
Reasons for choosing St. Thomas Aquinas: “I felt as though St. Thomas Aquinas was the best choice. I felt more loved there. The coaches, the environment – I liked it more, and I thought it was the right decision.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I knew since freshman year, and then I started working harder and harder. I realized I could go to a really good school, and the dream came true.”
Coach Joe Pesci says: “He’s one of those kids in high school who always seems happy. He’s a positive influence on the team. He’s a Sports Night overall captain, so kids like him. He was our starting centerfielder pretty much every single game. He rarely came out. He even got a couple starts as a sophomore in our 2022 season and played a lot in the state game we played. Defense is his huge strength, and he’s developed hitting over time. What was nice – people saw that in the summer. He had a season where I thought he should have gotten some all-league nods. He had a great summer, and he had some interest from some D1 and D2 schools, and he found a spot with a team that values him and thinks he’s going to be able to compete right away. He got the right package to a school where he’s going to get opportunities. We’re really looking forward to him being a part of our team as a leader. He was part of two championship teams over the past two years and had some good leaders ahead of him. He’s a kid we’re going to look to to lead us again this year.”
About Charlie:
Favorite food: Medium rare steak
Favorite movie: The Dark Knight
Favorite artist: Lil Uzi Vert
James Schaffer – Stony Brook University (Baseball)
Major: Computer Science
Final list of colleges: Stony Brook, Penn State, Elon, Woffard
Reasons for choosing Stony Brook: “I loved the campus, the coaches are really great, they gave me a great deal to go there, and I love the area.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I always knew I wanted to play baseball in college. I think when it really got serious was freshman year of high school. Freshman year I had a chance to play some varsity ball and just started taking it extra serious .”
Coach Joe Pesci says: “James is a three-starter for us. He was a freshman on the jayvee team, and the past two years he started for us at second base, and he was first team all-league. He’s a kid who’s smaller in stature, but he plays really tough. He’s been our leadoff hitter, and I don’t think he had an error last year. We’re looking forward to that kind of play from him. We’ll be moving him over to shortstop after losing (Ryan) Zuckerman last year. He obviously has big shoes to fill, but with his talent level and athleticism, he’s a kid who’s been first team all-league for two years. Again, it’s a combination of his good play with us but also his ability to be seen in the summer and to play at a high level in the summer, which got him to Stony Brook. It’s a good academic school. He got a great scholarship package and is another kid we’re looking to to be a leader. Not only is he a good player, but he’s one of those kids who’s very even keeled, and I think kids look to follow him.”
