Madelyn Spratt – American University (Lacrosse)

Major:  Undecided

Reasons for choosing American:  “My family lives around there, so I’ve grown up knowing American. I really like how it’s a city feel, but it has its own separate campus, so I’m not directly in the city. I also really like the academics because they offer a lot of diverse majors. The lacrosse program just got a new head coach, so I’m excited to be part of a building program, and I really want to contribute to that.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level?  “I started playing lacrosse in third grade, and when I had to make the decision choosing between lacrosse and soccer, that’s when I knew I was going to be really serious about lacrosse. In seventh and eighth grade, I became captain of my club team, and then I knew I really wanted to play Division 1 lacrosse, and I set that goal for myself.”

Coach Shannon MacPherson says: “I taught Maddy in middle school, so I had a relationship with her through middle school as a student and then getting to coach her – it’s just been such a privilege to coach her the past four years. I can’t believe she’s a senior already.

“Maddy stood out as a freshman. She’s just such a dynamic player. If something needs to be done, Maddy is your go-to, and she will get it done. She usually takes the draw, and she’s just an all-around team player. She’s a total game-changer, and she’s a captain this year and was a captain last year. She’s stepped up as a leader both on and off the field.”

“She’s a great kid. She genuinely wants her team to be successful, and she wants to see her teammates happy. You can see when Maddy plays she truly loves the game of lacrosse, and it’s just fun to watch her play because of her excitement. She improves every year, and I couldn’t be happier for her to be signing with American. She truly deserves it. She’s just an awesome kid and a great player too.”
