Derrick Woods – St. Bonaventure University (Basketball)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: St. Bonaventure, Long Island University, Niagara
Reasons for choosing St. Bonaventure: “Definitely the persuasion of the coaches and the team – I really felt loved by the team after hanging out with the team. The head coach recruited me instead of the assistant coaches. He was the first person to give me a call and pretty much let me know what it was. He was the one who gave me the offer.”
What the progression that led you to playing basketball at the collegiate level? “I didn’t start playing basketball until seventh and eighth grade. Basketball wasn’t really my main priority. I didn’t even want to play video game basketball – I wasn’t a fan of basketball at all. My mom had me in track, so I could jump. When I got to high school, I broke out pretty much.
“I got my first offer during my junior season from Binghamton in New York. That was a real good school and I liked them, but when AAU season started, a lot more offers started piling up. I got a lot more calls. It was crazy. There were stressful nights trying to pick the right college.”
Coach Bill Coleman says: “He’s worked hard over the last few years to become who you see today. Most importantly, he’s just starting to mature as a person, so as he matures he’s going to continue to flourish as long as he continues to work hard.
“He has a great work ethic, and he’s very athletic – one of the most athletic kids in the school. When you see him in action on the floor, his athleticism stands out above everything. He’s a great kid, from a great family. I wish him nothing but the best. I’m so happy for him.”
