Brett Bottinger – Chestnut Hill College (Baseball)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: Chestnut Hill, Hood College, Penn State Brandywine, West Chester, Millersville
Reasons for choosing Chestnut Hill: “Just growing up in the area – my neighbor is the athletic director, and it just seemed like family from the start and I wanted to go there.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “Ever since I was young, I always wanted to play baseball. I always played other sports – I played basketball, I played hockey, I played all kinds of sports growing up. Baseball – there was something about it that kept me coming back.
“For me, the college process started in ninth grade at our fall baseball tryout. A college coach was there with coach Manero, and he said he liked me. From there on, I knew I wanted to play. I took a different route. I didn’t just play (American) Legion – I played in the AAU circuit for two years and got some college interest that way.”
Coach Chris Manero says: “Brett set his sights – he knew he wanted to play college baseball throughout high school, and he’s been very self driven to get himself to that point. He’s very self motivated, and any time you see a player who wants to go to the next level they need to have that because there’s not going to be anybody that’s going to hold their hand. He has that mentality and that approach to succeed at the college level, and I also think the way that he works – particularly the way he works on his strength and his conditioning – I think his ceiling is high. I don’t think he’s reached it yet. He was our number two pitcher and pitched probably the most important game of the season for us when he defeated Souderton in the district quarterfinals. He holds the title of the only pitcher to beat Souderton in the postseason. It was nice to have that moment for him to close out his high school career.”
