Tyler Merwarth – University at Albany (Football)
Major: Communications
Reasons for choosing Albany: “I liked the interactions I had with the coaches. They have a great program, and the school fits me academically.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level? “I never really started thinking about it until after my junior year, and that’s when I started hearing from some coaches and realized I had a shot to play in college.”
Coach George Banas says: “There’s a lot of things I could say about Tyler. He’s a three-year letter winner, a six-time all-league selection – four of which were first team. That does not happen very often. Some of the things he did on the field – you sit and watch them on film in amazement, but besides all of that, going back to his incoming freshman year, he showed me what kind of person he was in a conversation we had outside of Alumni Field. He came to me and we had a long talk about where I saw him in the program and where I saw him in this community and where I saw him in this family. A lot of people don’t understand what Tyler’s been through. In that conversation, we sealed a deal that he was going to stay in Quakertown, and he was going to play football. For the next four years, we were blessed to have him in the program. From leadership to becoming a young man and really an adult right out of the gate freshman year on up, I’m proud of the man he has become. When making this decision about going to college, we had many text messages, phone calls, emails, and when it came down to it, he bet on himself. Tyler took the preferred walk-on to the University at Albany, a Division 1 football program, and he bet on himself that he’s going to up there and he’s going to get a full ride by next year. I have absolutely no doubt that will occur. Congratulations, Tyler.”
