Mackenzie Mulkiewicz – Davis & Elkins University (Golf)
Major: Double major in Criminology and Psychology
Final list of colleges: Davis & Elkins, Millersville, East Stroudsburg
Reasons for choosing Davis & Elkins: “It’s very scenic, it’s beautiful, it’s in a very small town as well. Also, the golf team for women isn’t established there, so we’ll be pioneering the first women’s golf team.”
What’s the progression that led you to competing in golf at the collegiate level? “I’ve been golfing since before my freshman year, and I always knew I wanted to keep doing golf as long as possible because I have a very big passion for it. It’s dear to my heart, especially because my grandparents used to play with me, so there’s a lot of sentimental emotions with it.”
Coach Nick Hood says: “I had the pleasure of coaching Mackenzie for four years. She’s my favorite kind of athlete because she worked hard, and it paid off in the end. I taught her in eighth grade, and I didn’t even know she liked golf. She came out. I thought, ‘Okay, she likes it. She’s got to work at it,’ and she did. She worked for four years. Her mom would send me pictures of her chipping at night at home with just the porch light on in her backyard. She worked with Ryan Shaughnessy, a PGA teaching pro. She worked really hard. She set a goal for herself to make districts. Last year it didn’t work out for her, but this year she came out – she had a bad front nine, and if you know golf, you can have a good front nine and a bad back nine. I left her after the front nine. She had the best back nine of her entire career, and she made districts. She set a goal, and she reached it. To me, that’s the best kind of athlete, the kid that keeps working, working and working. I’m so proud of her. I think (she’ll) do amazing things.”
