Shelby Schoonover – Lycoming College (Basketball)

Final list of colleges: Lycoming, Penn State-Berks, Gwynedd Mercy, McDaniel, Eastern University
Reasons for choosing Lycoming: “I decided to go to Lycoming because when you go on the campus, you want to have that feeling ‘I love it here,’ and I had that right away. All the coaches were so nice to me. They seemed like they really wanted me to go there.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate basketball? “When I started AAU in 10th grade with the Renegades, I went to a lot of college showcases, and I saw all these college coaches. I really love the game of basketball, and I really wanted to continue my career.
“I always watched girls’ basketball on TV – I know that’s D-1 and this is D-3, but I wanted to continue because I love it so much.”
Coach Lindsay Tennett says: “Just watching her the past four years develop into the person she is – she’s just turned around 360. She’s changed. She always knew she wanted to play basketball in college. The amount of work she’s put in is just awesome. In games where we can’t get that spark, she comes out and hits a wide open three that could be NBA range, and we don’t get upset with her for taking it because we have faith in her.
“She started out being a great shooter – that’s something we knew coming in her freshman year, and just watching her develop into an all-around player. She works on defense, she looks to attack the basket, she gets to the free throw line. She’s really developed into a nice player. She was a huge part of our team this year, and we’re definitely going to miss her next year. I think Lycoming is lucky to have her.”
