Souderton senior Brian Reiner was recognized for committing to continue his baseball career at Penn State Harrisburg.
Brian Reiner – Penn State Harrisburg (Baseball)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: Penn State Harrisburg, Cabrini, DeSales, Arcadia
Reasons for choosing Penn State Harrisburg: “There were a couple of schools that I was in communication with, but none of them really stuck out like Penn State Harrisburg. I’ve always wanted to go to Penn State, and I just thought this would be the best fitting school for me. Harrisburg is probably the top satellite school for baseball.”
What was the progression that led you to playing baseball at the collegiate level? “I always wanted to play basketball in college, but I got realistic about it. A huge part of it is height – I’m 5-11, and that’s considered short for college basketball. I just enjoy the pace of basketball, but I think I have a lot more potential with baseball. I was talking to DeSales and Widener for basketball, and I thought about the potential I had for baseball because height isn’t going to determine how far I go.”
Coach Mike Childs says: “Brian is the type of kid that has a great personality, he’s a good athlete, and I think he’s matured. He’s a kid that could move on and excel at baseball. I push for kids to play multiple sports, and for him to be one of the top basketball players and was going to be one of the top baseball players this year is pretty amazing in this day and age. To be a stud in two sports, you don’t see that a whole lot especially in two major sports.
“On top of that, he could play multiple positions. He was an infielder, he was an outfielder, and he was a pitcher. I’m sure if I threw him in as a catcher he would catch too. Throwing him into the state championship game never playing third base before - I’m sure people were looking at me and saying, ‘He’s nuts. How do you throw a kid in the state championship game who’s never played third before?’ I just based that off athleticism and it worked out. He’s a very likable kid, and he will definitely be missed.”
