Conlan Wall – St. Joseph’s University (Baseball)
Major: Business Undecided
Final list of colleges: St. Joe’s, West Chester, Millersville, University of Maine
Reasons for choosing St. Joe’s: “I talked to other schools, but St. Joe’s was actually the first program to offer to me. I knew I wanted to go there and be part of their program, so I went there as soon as they offered.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about college baseball when I was 13 and started playing for the PA Shockers, which was my AAU team. Back then, I was super small, skinny, short – I still am short, but I’m not skinny and small. I knew I had to put a lot of work in to get to what I wanted to go. Obviously, the goal is always to play D1, but I didn’t know if I’d be able to make it. I was able to work hard enough, and here I am.”
Coach Mike Childs says: “Conlan worked at my baseball camp, and just watching him work and help other kids – that’s who he is. He’s a hard worker. I use him as an example for the younger kids. Stature-wise, he’s not the biggest kid, but he works like he’s a seven-footer and probably works even bigger than that. He dead lifted 500 pounds this winter in the weight room. On and off the field, he’s a warrior, he’s a leader, and he’s a motivator. There’s a picture of Conlan sliding into third in a big play – he pops up, jumps off the bag, his arms in the air to motivate the team. That picture sums up who he is. His uniform is dirty, he slides into third for a triple, and he yells to the bench, screaming and cheering as a motivator.
“He’s lightening fast. We got through tryouts this spring before they shut us down. As we’re running the 60, the faster kids are being watched by the underclassmen. When Conlan stepped up to do the 60, basically every other drill station stops to watch him run because they know who he is and what he can do. He’s had some challenges at times being a captain. Anytime I need something – who do I text first? I text Conlan. He’s so good and so reliable and responsible. He’s almost like an assistant coach but at a player level. I do put some pressure on him that way, but I know that he can handle it.
“There are moments I think about when I think of Conlan. We were playing in the quarterfinals of districts when he was a sophomore, and they have their ace on the mound who is going to Maryland. Conlan steps in as our leadoff hitter, and this kid is throwing 87-88 – he rips a double off the fence. Just like that, he took a top pitcher and showed the rest of the team, ‘I can hit him.’ If you can do that in the leadoff spot, it relaxes the rest of the team – ‘You know what, this kid is good, but I can hit him.’ That’s the kind of stuff he could do.”
