Martin Worgan – Kutztown University (Football)
Major: Exercise Science
Final list of colleges: Kutztown, Delaware Valley, Shippensburg
Reasons for choosing Kutztown: “Location, the campus and the coach.”
What was the progression that led you to playing football at the collegiate level? “I always knew I wanted to play sports at the collegiate level. I’ve always had a passion for the game and persevered. I worked hard to obtain my goals. The recruiting process started in junior year.”
Coach Chris Shelly says: “Just his passion – I’ve never been around a kid who just threw himself into football the way he did. He just loves the game. Our biggest problem – it was a nice one to have – was not letting him over train. He’s the type of kid who would work out three, four, five times a day.
“He came a long way. He’d be the first to admit that he wasn’t always a great student. He saw himself more as an athlete first. When he got an award this year as a senior for doing high level, ‘A’ level work, the smile on his face was just unbelievable. I think he’s truly tapped into what he can do when he puts his mind to something. It was really neat to see him come into his own as a person and a student-athlete.
“When Martin was younger, he would let the emotions kind of get to him because he played so hard and with such passion, but he learned how to curtail that and control that and really lead us. The guys around him saw the passion that he played with. His leadership, his maturity – it was just so nice to see that come to fruition with him.
“He was obviously a big cog in our run to a district championships, but the neat thing about him was that he brought the other guys with him. It wasn’t the Martin Worgan show. It was kind of like ‘Get on my back. I’m going to take you there,’ and the guys did. I had a great bunch of seniors. I’m going to miss them, and I’m just excited to see Martin take his game to the next level. I think he found a good fit at Kutztown. We’re going to try to find time to get our whole team to go see him play because that’s the kind of inspiration he is for our younger guys.”
