Rachel Hyman – Ursinus College (Softball)
Major: Business with a Minor in Communications
Final list of colleges: Ursinus, Albright, Elizabethtown, Delaware Valley
Reasons for choosing Ursinus: “It just it provides a great overall liberal arts college. Coach (Heather) Boyer and coach (Ellie) Knise have really influenced me and provided me with a good environment of teamwork. Also, I went to a couple clinics my junior year at Ursinus and got to know the girls. They were very welcoming. Coach (Samantha) Campo and coach (Jerry) Thompson – I’m very excited to play for them next year at Ursinus. Also, it’s close to home, so my parents will be able to come and watch games.”
What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate softball? “Starting my freshman year when I really started to work on my skills and improve – it’s been a goal of mine since then. I just love the sport, and I love the environment. Being on a team, I’ve made a lot of friends in my years of playing softball, and it’s going to be nice going to Ursinus to already have a core group of friends starting off there.”
Coach Heather Boyer says: “Rachel has been a four-year varsity starter, and I still remember the first indoor workout I had with her as a freshman. She just had this look in her eye – she was very fierce and very focused. She wasn’t afraid. Sometimes when younger players come in, they’re a little tentative. She was not, which really set her apart from everyone else. I even remember distinctly saying to myself, ‘I’m not sure where I’m putting her yet, but she is a varsity level player.’
“Rachel is one heck of a third baseman. She has a really quick release, a strong arm, and her hitting has come a long way. Last year she really became a power hitter and can put some good pop in the ball, so she is our three-four hitter. I usually put her third because I want her to get that extra at-bat, but she truly could be a four hole hitter too.
“She really has been a true leader by example. She’s very mature for her age. She works really hard at the sport. She commits to summer ball and plays all year round, and that’s really the difference between a good softball player and a great one. You need the reps, you need the experience, and she has that. She’s a great kid to coach. She has a great attitude, a real positive upbeat nature about her which makes her really approachable by her younger teammates. She’s going to Ursinus which is my alma mater, so that’s really exciting.”
