Abbie Amdor – Penn State University (Swimming)
Major: Occupational Therapy with a minor in Psychology
Final list of colleges: Penn State, LSU, Nebraska, Kentucky, Virginia Tech
Reasons for choosing Penn State: “I chose Penn State for the family aspect. It was just the right fit for me in every aspect.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in swimming at the collegiate level? “My older brother (Wyatt Amdor) went to Kentucky and swam, and once I saw that, I was like, ‘I want to do something like that.’ I had a breakout year in swimming my sophomore year, and that’s what really drove me into making sure I went to a D-1 school.”
Coach Pat Redican says: “Abbie is a tremendous athlete. She’s a gifted, talented, hardworking kid, and she’s pretty much rewritten a good portion of our school record board singlehandedly. That’s saying something because there are some pretty fast times up there. She holds the individual record in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, and she involved in all three relays that are up on the board.
“She’s got the focus, there’s not doubt about it. She wants it and she knows how to go after it. She’s a great competitor. She’s humble – kids look at her like she’s something and she doesn’t look at herself that way. She’s very grounded, and she’s very team oriented too.”
