Upper Dublin's Cubit to Compete in Crew at Rhode Island

On Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022, Upper Dublin senior Amanda Cubit was recognized for committing to continue her crew career at the University of Rhode Island.

Amanda Cubit – University of Rhode Island (Crew)

Major: Business/Undecided

Final list of colleges:  Rhode Island, Duquesne, UConn, Michigan State

Reasons for choosing Rhode Island:  “After visiting URI’s campus in September, I was immediately drawn to the scenery and location of the campus. Additionally, the community that filled the campus felt very comfortable to me. URI offers a good business program where I can meet my academic goals and also a great rowing program. The ability to truly envision myself as a student-athlete there made the decision easy for me.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in crew at the collegiate level?  “I decided to try rowing when I was looking for a fall sport in 2019 because my sister, who rowed for Penn State, spoke very highly of it. That fall I joined Whitemarsh Boat Club in Conshohocken, PA, for their fall race team. This sport was not like any other sport I had competed in before. It taught me a lot of valuable lessons about hard work.

“Initially, I tried to find a balance between softball and crew, but I realized I felt my best when I was rowing. In the summer of 2021, I stopped playing softball so that I could fully spend time on crew. At that time, I started to consider the idea of rowing in college after hearing about my teammates pursuing this path. I made a recruitment page and began to reach out to various schools that I had an interest in. Over my junior year, I spent time emailing and calling schools while working on my personal goals. After seeing how positively crew impacted my life, I knew it was something I wanted to continue for my college career.”

Coach Joe Sullivan says:  “Two of the biggest attributes – she has good size for a rower and the strength. She’s committed to rowing, and she’s gotten a lot better. Even this year, she’s still improving quite a bit, and she has the second fastest time on the team.  She just comes in every day and quietly goes about her work. She’s been with the team since before she was in ninth grade, but she didn’t compete in the spring season until last year because she was playing softball. When she committed fulltime to rowing, she became one of our stronger, better rowers very quickly. She’s very easy to coach, she looks to get better every day, she does whatever she’s asked, and she’s one of those people you really like having on the team, and she’s a very, very good teammate.”
