Alex Flynn – Drexel University (Swimming)
Major: Earth Sciences
Final list of colleges: Drexel, Pitt, Bucknell, Rider, Cornell
Reasons for choosing Drexel: “Their co-op program was a major consideration. It’s a fantastic academic school along with the other choices, but it was definitely the co-op program that really stood out for me.”
What was the progression that led you to compete in swimming at the collegiate level? “Swimming was mainly an outlet to pay for college, but I always had the thought that I do want to swim in college to continue it and then to help pay for college. I really enjoy it.”
Coach Geoff Scheuer says: “Alex is a gentleman and a scholar. I feel as though he’s been an unsung member of the team in his years here so far. We had a 400 free relay in 2016 states that went under three minutes. We were the first team in Pennsylvania history to do that, and we had three seniors on that relay and Alex Flynn, who was a sophomore. He was like the ‘other guy’ on the relay, but he swam amazingly and did this amazing thing. Last year, we didn’t have any seniors on the team, so he sort of had to play the role of senior leader even though he wasn’t a senior yet. Again, this mantle fell on him, so he’s been in these situations over the years where he’s had to be an unsung hero of the team, and he’s played that role admirably. He’s come a long way, he’s learned a lot from being in those positions, and I think his best is still to come. Now that he is a senior he can actually be the real hero. We’ll see what happens.”
