Joe Kim – Boston University (Track & Field)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Boston University, Lafayette, Lehigh, Tufts
Reasons for choosing Boston University: “I thought the program at BU was the best, and the coach cared the most.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in track and field at the collegiate level? “Not even a year ago, I started thinking about it at the end of summer, and I started calling coaches. Even a year ago, I would not have thought I was going to college for sports. (I started thinking about it) because of how much I improved in one season.”
Coach Paul Vandegrift says: “I don’t coach him directly. Coach Flanagan is the one who’s been overseeing his improvement and having him do drills and getting stronger. Joe Kim very much wants to be good at it. I don’t think there’s any kind of magic about what he’s done. He’s really worked out in the weight room, he throws his javelin an awful lot, and his form has improved greatly. When you put together increasing strength and better technique, you’re going to get big jumps in the javelin because it’s not something that’s all about strength. The javelin only weighs two-and-a-half pounds. It really is about harnessing your strength to get it to fly properly so it does go far. He’s gotten bigger, he’s gotten stronger, and he has improved, and in large measure, it is because he’s wanted to. He’s really worked in the offseason and in the weight room and gotten better.”
