Madeline Spaulding – Cedarville University (Cross Country/Track)

Major:  Early Childhood Education

Reasons for choosing Cedarville:  “Actually, right from the beginning I decided I wanted to go to Cedarville. I visited it with my family, and I just really loved it. Both my parents went there and my grandparents, so I’ve been hearing about it all my life. It’s just a really good fit for me.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “I’ve done track since middle school, and the more I’ve done it, the more I’ve fallen in love with it, and I couldn’t imagine doing school without also track. We visited the school, and I talked to the coach, and I just really wanted to do it.”

Track & field coach Matt Dwyer says: “Maddie is a phenomenal track and field and cross country athlete. She’s been a varsity athlete for us since she was a freshman. She was our school record holder in the indoor 800-meter run. She’s been a leader for us since day one. Coming in as a home school kid, she fit right in and has been a phenomenal part of the program. This year we’ve relied on her for everything from the 800 to the mile to the 3200, even dropping down to the 400. She’s been great at setting goals for herself and achieving those goals throughout the course of the season, whether they’re her own times or team goals. Last year she was a key component in us winning our first league championship in 20 years. This year, she led us to a repeat, which was a great accomplishment. Maddie always puts the team in front of herself. She’ll sacrifice her individual events for relays every time. You can’t really ask more of an athlete. She was 100 percent without a doubt our leader on the distance side. She leads every workout, leads every practice and is somebody we as coaches rely on every day to show our younger girls the way to do it properly.”

Assistant track and head cross country coach Tony Giammarco says:  “Maddie has been a four-year member of both the track and cross country teams, a four-year varsity letter winner. Her work ethic is unrivaled by her teammates. She does everything the right way. She’s extremely coachable. She’s very competitive, but also she’s a great teammate, she’s very inclusive, and she’s very thoughtful. She’s always willing to encourage her teammates. She’s basically what every coach pretty much wishes to have in terms of an athlete. She’s a class act both on and off the course and track, and we’re very sad to see her go, but we wish her the best moving forward.”
