Kelly Bates – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (Field Hockey)

Major: Criminal Justice Studies/Pre-law

Reasons for choosing UMass Dartmouth: “Academically, I was considering a lot of schools like St. Joe’s, Arcadia and others. I really liked the environment (at UMass Dartmouth), the people on the team and the coaches as well as the school itself.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in field hockey at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about it a little bit at the start of high school, but as sophomore year and junior year progressed, I really wanted to go for field hockey.”

UM field hockey coach Pam Remmey: “Kelly was a captain, and she was a main defensive player her junior and senior year. Her excellent stickwork and ability to stop attackers helped our team tremendously. Kelly was a huge part of our defensive and offensive corners. As a defensive player, she does not get much of a chance for stats or scoring, but she was the inserter and/or striker on our offensive corners.
“KB - as she is called by the team - scored on a corner as inserter to lift the team to a win her junior year, then as a striker she scored her senior year.  She earned second team All-SOL.
“Kelly’s most significant award was given to her among all the female student athletes in Upper Moreland’s senior class. The award – the Marjorie Smith Award - is given to someone who strives for the team success and is committed to the team in every way and not concerned with individual honors or publicity.”
