On Monday, May 3, 2021, Wissahickon seniors Jake Slackman, Christian Vorchheimer & Jack Schmidt were recognized for committing to play soccer at the collegiate level.
Jack Schmidt – Ursinus College (Soccer)
Major: Health and Physical Education Teaching
Reasons for choosing Ursinus: “Playing soccer and great teaching program. Loved the campus and enjoyed talking to the students, players and coaches.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level? “Once I started playing higher level soccer, it became clear that I wanted to play as long as I could and I wanted to keep playing higher level soccer. I also saw how much my cousin enjoyed playing for his college team. The Ursinus coach saw one of my games and reached out to me. I then scheduled a meeting with the head coach and really enjoyed the meeting.”
Coach Stuart Malcolm says: “Jack is going to Ursinus College. He was a great captain to have this past year. With everything that was going on, he made sure the guys were there and ready for practice. Obviously, it was tough times with regards to making sure everyone was doing what they needed to do. Before practice and after practice, he made sure he did the right things. He was a leader by example, but one of the great aspects with Jack is he basically would do whatever the team needed him to do. He played in a defensive situation this year where he was more of a midfield type player. He just did what he needed to do to make the team better. I’m sure he’s going to do the same thing at Ursinus and do whatever the coach wants him to do. As a result of that, I’m sure he’s going to be very successful. Jack, Jake and Christian together were our three captains this year, and they did a great job. I wish them all the best after what was a very trying season for them all.”

Jake Slackman – Carnegie Mellon University (Soccer)
Major: Biology
Final list of colleges: Carnegie Mellon, Washington & Lee, MIT, Princeton
Reasons for choosing Carnegie Mellon: “It’s a fantastic school that gives me all the opportunities I could want for my future. It also gives a great blend of school, soccer, and social life. It’s all around fantastic.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level? “I loved soccer and just wanted to continue playing. So, around tenth grade in order to get the recruiting process started I made sure I was on a team that went to all the right tournaments as well as made sure I had a coach that could help me throughout the process. It all settled itself out from there.”
Coach Stuart Malcolm says: “Jake Slackman is off to Carnegie Mellon. He’s a smart kid, so he’s going to pick up on a lot of things they do, understand the aspects of the game and what he needs to do on the field. He’s very strong, quick, fast, and he knew where the goal was. Unfortunately for him, it came in a little bit later – the last couple of years of his time here at Wissahickon with regards to the varsity players that were on the team before, but when he got in, he certainly made an impact. He’s going to do a good job for Carnegie Mellon.”

Christian Vorchheimer – Millersville College (Soccer)
Major: Applied Engineering
Final list of colleges: Millersville, Monmouth, Saint Joe’s, Moravian
Reasons for choosing Millersville: “Strong academic program, great and strong soccer program.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level? “I started playing soccer at a very young age, and I had a passion for it. Playing college soccer was something I’ve always wanted to do. I started out playing for my local club team, but shortly after, I switched to playing for a different club at a higher level. Through that club, I gained experience like playing for the Union Juniors and traveling all over the country to play in a National League. This team gave me good exposure, which ultimately led to my recruitment to Millersville.”
Coach Stuart Malcolm says: “Christian was able to make the varsity team as a freshman on a team that basically all the others were seniors, so obviously, his talent stood out right from the start, and it continued throughout the four years. He took more of a leadership as those years went on. It’s been great to have him in the program. He was a leader by example – he was one of the quieter ones, but he certainly contributed a lot to the program throughout the years. He’s very, very talented, very, very gifted technically, and I’m sure he’s going to do great things at Millersville.”
