Emma Clayborne – Holy Family University (Softball)
Major: Childhood Education or English Education
Final list of colleges: Holy Family, West Chester, DeSales, Wilkes
Reasons for choosing Holy Family: “Holy Family overall is the best fit for me for a couple of reasons. They have a good education program, next it is close to home, and finally, they have the perfect size campus for me. I know some students who attend there now and have in the past and loved it.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level? “Ever since I started getting older and playing harder teams, probably around 10 or 11, is when I realized I loved softball so much that I would want to try and continue at the collegiate level.
“My recruiting process started in probably eighth grade when I went to my first camp at Elizabethtown University. That really put a perspective on the rest of my softball career and set the tone for the rest of it as well, and that’s when I knew I wanted to play softball as long as I could. The recruiting process continued, and I constantly emailed coaches and asked them what their program was like, and they came out to watch me play at my travel games.
“Most of the colleges I reached out to were close to home, then I would go and visit them, and from there, I decided if I wanted to pursue that college. Overall, the process of recruiting is something I will never forget and was such an interesting thing to go through at such a young age and see what my future held as a college athlete.”
Coach Mike Borkowski says: “As the head coach, I’ve had the privilege of coaching Emma Clayborne for the past three years. Emma’s a throwback player. She always worries about the ‘we’ and not the ‘I’ when she’s involved with the team. That’s one of my favorite things about her. If we were up in a game, she would say, ‘You can take me out and put so and so if we need to.’ Last year with COVID, she organized the drive-by parade for the seniors. This way all the seniors would have their special moment.
“Holy Family is getting a terrific player. I don’t know where the coach is going to play her, but it doesn’t matter. She’s one of those players that would play anywhere for her team. Good luck at Holy Family, Emma. We’re looking forward to a terrific senior season from you.”
