Heather Zezzo – Dartmouth College (Field Hockey)
Major: Engineering
Final list of colleges: Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown, Yale, Syracuse, William & Mary, Temple
Reasons for choosing Dartmouth: “It was nice to have options. When I received my offer from Dartmouth, it was my first one. It wasn’t an automatic yes. I still had to look at my options, but in the end, I knew that was where I was supposed to go.
“I am so thrilled. My mom asked me the other day, ‘When did you know you wanted to go Ivy?’ I think I set my sights on it since eighth grade, and I realize that’s always what I wanted to achieve. I’m really glad that at this point I got that.”
What was the progression that led you to playing field hockey at the collegiate level? “I was about 13 when my coach, who moved away to Virginia, inspired all of us and said, ‘I know you guys can compete at the college level.’ She really made me believe in myself.”
What was the highlight of your time at CB West? “We have had so many different coaches. Every single year I’ve been here we’ve had a different coach. Going into my senior year, I wasn’t expecting much at all. I was hoping as a team we would get along. I knew we were a pretty cohesive family, but having coach Casey Hughes step in and bring this whole new plan to CB West field hockey, it was great. We achieved so much more than we even hoped for.”
Coach Casey Hughes says: “Heather is just an all-around great kid. She’s a captain and an amazing leader. She’s super humble about her abilities and every single one of her strengths that she possesses. She could find the cage, no matter where she was at in the circle. Wherever she was in the circle, she was ready – stick down, feet going in the direction of the goal and just anticipating the play and was able to put it in for us this season. She had 26 goals and five assists and also set up plays for us as our center mid. She just leads by example. She has a strong work ethic.”
