On Thursday, Feb. 24, 2022, CB South senior Andrew Schaefer was recognized for committing to continue his cross country career at Longwood University.
Andrew Schaefer – Longwood University (Cross Country)
Major: Biology/Secondary Education
Final list of colleges: Longwood, Stockton, Coastal Carolina, University of South Florida
Reasons for choosing Longwood: “I liked that it was small but bigger than a lot of other schools. I like the little town it was in. It felt like home.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in cross country at the collegiate level? “In 11th grade, I really started to take it more seriously. I started playing soccer when I was really little, and I didn’t make our school team, so I ran cross country as a filler sport before trying out the following year. Instead of trying out for soccer 10th grade, I decided to run cross country again. I had a lot of fun with it, and I took it more seriously the next two years.”
Coach Connor Simpson says: “I have only coached Andrew for one year, but I know from his past experience that he tried out for soccer, didn’t make the team, and came out for cross country. I know he has had accomplishments before I got here, but what I have seen from him as his coach is – he definitely has a resilience to him. Even in cross country, he tends to be kind of a small kid, but he doesn’t let that impede his success or his motivation. I’ve watched him bounce back from injuries or adversity. He’s a good leader on the team. He was one of the only seniors, so he sets a really good example for the younger kids. He improved his 5K time, I believe, by 30 seconds this year.”
