MERCER COUNTY 6, BUCKS-MONT 5 (12 innings)
The Bucks-Mont squad was nothing if not resilient in Friday’s Carpenter Cup contest at Villanova Ballpark, rallying to knot the score in the eighth inning and then putting the tying run on second after Mercer County scored three runs in the top of the 12thinning.
The bottom of the 12th began with rising Upper Dublin senior Jared Levis collecting a single and advancing all the way to third on an error. Souderton graduate Shanley Wall drew a walk, and both runners scored when recent CB West grad Aidan Quinn hit a two-run double. Mercer County went to its bullpen, calling on Jackson Kraemer.
The Wake Forrest commit struck out the first two batters he faced, and the game came to an end when the Bucks-Mont base runner was gunned down attempting to steal third.
Upper Dublin coach Ed Wall, the head coach of Bucks-Mont, had nothing but good things to say about his squad.
“That was the quickest longest game played – great baseball all around,” the UD coach said. “We are really proud of the way our guys battled back.
“Speaking for the whole coaching staff, it was our pleasure to have the opportunity to coach the team full of great players and even better kids. Seniors, best of luck next year, and underclassmen, we hope to see you again in our quest to get to The Bank.”
Early on in the game, Bucks-Mont took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with rising Central Bucks West senior Matt Carr driving in both runs. Mercer County responded with a run in the first and two more in the sixth to go on top 3-2.
Bucks-Mont evened the score in the eighth when rising Central Bucks South senior Owen Wheeler delivered a clutch RBI double that plated recent Upper Dublin graduate Nick Harley, who drew a two-out walk.
That tie stood until the 12thinning when Mercer County scored three with Jack Hughes delivering the big blow, a two-run triple.
Bucks-Mont collected 10 hits, led by the perfect 3-for-3 effort with a triple and two runs scored by Jared Levis out of the leadoff spot. Quinn was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Recent Hatboro-Horsham grad Will Bruner and Souderton grad Luke Pollock each had a double.
The loss overshadowed several standout pitching performances for the Bucks-Mont. Quakertown rising senior Vinny Pellegrini earned the start and threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out five and walking one. Central Bucks West rising senior Julio Ermigiotti allowed two hits and struck out three in three shutout innings – the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, and Will McCausland followed and was once again all but untouchable, allowing one hit while striking out six and walking none in three shutout innings.
