SOL Football Forecast (9-8-22)

Football Forecast Vol. 2

By Scott Huff

The Suburban One League Continental Conference began the 2022 season with a spectacular Week One with a perfect 7-0 record.

However, unless you are a fan of either the Souderton Indians or the Upper Dublin Flying Cardinals – Week Two was extremely painful for the SOL Continental Conference faithful to watch.

The SOL National Conference spanked the SOL Continental Conference in five of the seven scheduled cross-over games.  Collectively the SOL National Conference outscored the SOL Continental Conference by a staggering 192-35.  The final scores in the SOL National Conference victories were 49-7, 45-13, 42-0, 35-8, and 21-7 with four of the games decided by the mercy-rule.

To avoid a SOL National Conference clean sweep, Souderton held off a late rally to defeat neighborhood rival Pennridge, 24-21, while Upper Dublin was impressive in a 35-7 victory over Central Bucks West.

This week will once again feature cross-over non-league games between the SOL National and the SOL Continental.  All seven of the cross-over games will be played on the home fields of the SOL National Conference.

Let’s hope for a more competitive week of football this week.

In the SOL American Conference both Upper Moreland and Springfield are unbeaten in 2022 with a pair of convincing non-league victories, while both Wissahickon and William Tennent are still in search of that elusive first 2022 victory.

Stay tuned.

Trivia – What do Upper Moreland Golden Bear running back Stephen Broderick and Springfield Spartan running back Dylan McKenzie have in common after two non-league games this year?

“I’ll be back” – Arnold Schwarzengger from the movie ‘The Terminator’

Neshaminy head coach Steve Wilmot and Pennsbury head coach Galen Snyder might not have the menacing glare of ‘good old’ Arnold – well, maybe one of them does - but both the proud programs of the Blue & Red and the Black & Orange seem to be back on track after a dreadful 2021 football season.

Last season Neshaminy posted a dismal overall record of 2-8, while Pennsbury was even worse with a winless mark of 0-10.  And one of the two Redskin wins came against the Falcons on the final day of the regular season.

Already in the 2022 season, Neshaminy has matched the total number of wins in 2021.  The unbeaten Redskins have defeated both Ocean City (New Jersey), 21-0 – and Council Rock South, 21-7.

And already in the 2022 season, Pennsbury has won more games than a season ago.  The Falcons ended a 17-game losing streak with a 35-0 victory over William Tennent.

Now time will tell if either, or both, Neshaminy and Pennsbury are going to regain its prior status of being among the elite teams in the Suburban One League.  And in all the PIAA District One for that matter.

The early returns are encouraging for both Redskin and Falcon fans.

Stay tuned.

Answer to trivia – Both Upper Moreland running back Stephen Broderick and Springfield running back Dylan McKenzie have each scored 3 touchdowns in each of the first two games for the Golden Bears and the Spartans.

Just another day at the Beach
Upper Moreland head coach Adam Beach is back for his third stint as head coach of the Golden Bears.

Upper Moreland is off to a fast 2-0 start this season with a pair of impressive non-league wins.  The Bears have outscored opponents by a commanding 82-13 margin in the first two games of the season with wins over neighborhood rival Hatboro Horsham (41-0) and Archbishop Carroll (41-13).

Upper Moreland will receive a stronger challenge this week, however, as the Golden Bears will be on the road against Interboro (1-1).  The Bucs are coming off a 48-7 non-league victory over Pottstown.

Stay tuned.

And the beat goes on…
