HATFIELD — Although an ice hockey game consists of three periods, sometimes one is enough.
For the defending Flyers Cup champion Pennridge Rams, the first period sufficed to carry them to a 9-2 win over Lower Merion in the opening round of the tournament at Hatfield Ice.
In fact, Pennridge probably could have not scored in the final two periods and still would have won 4-2. So, while they did score five other goals in the last two periods, it wasn’t what coach Jeff Montagna wanted.
“We had a great first period, we had a (terrible) second period,” the Rams’ coach said. “In the second period, we allowed a team with 10 guys to play at their speed.
“We told them that this can’t happen. We don’t have the luxury of taking periods off.”
Luckily for Pennridge, it did have Shane Dachowski. And he scored twice in the first period and once in the second and added an assist in the third to lead the way.
“He kind of picked up where he left off in the Flyers Cup last year,” said Montagna. “I think he led the Flyers Cup in scoring last year and he picked up right where he left off.”
Dachowski didn’t do it all on his own. He had plenty of help.
His linemates, Kevin Pico and Andrew Savona, contributed to the offensive output. The line as a whole finished with eight points.
“I thought that line moved the puck really well,” Montagna said. “In the last few games, that hadn’t been the case. Right from the first shift, I thought they did.”
Dachowski enjoys the postseason and appreciates what his teammates bring to the table.
“It’s exciting,” he said. “The favorite time - playoffs for both teams, travel and high school. The adrenaline is amazing.
“We know we’re always going to have an advantage (because) we’re all so comfortable playing with each other for years. We take that advantage all the time.”
Another contributor to the offensive show was Nick Young. He assisted on both Dachowski goals in the first period, both of them short-handed.
“I play with Shane on my travel team,” Young said, “and we did that last weekend a lot and we got some goals. I was kind of trying to do the same thing with him.”
After the four-goal first period, Pennridge seemed to settle into something it didn’t want. While the Rams scored two goals in the second, the Aces also netted a pair.
“We can’t let that happen again,” Dachowski said. “We know that. We’re probably not going to let that happen again.”
In that second period, Lower Merion scored first. Kiernan Ryan got the Aces’ first tally with only 28 seconds gone in the period.
Pennridge came back with two more, one by Andrew Lizak and Dachowski’s third. However, Lower Merion finished off the scoring in the period on a Jack Rabinowitz score.
But it was the first period that really salted away the victory for Pennridge. Kevin Pico opened the scoring at 5:44 and less than a minute later Dachowski got his first at 6:40.
Colin Dachowski got into the scoring act at 10:29. His brother notched his second short-handed goal, both off Young assists, at 14:49.
The Rams didn’t allow the Aces another goal. They did score three of their own in the third period.
James Rush netted two of them, the first one on the power play at 2:53 and the second at 6:38. Sandwiched in between them, Pico got his second goal at 5:30.
Pennridge will now face a familiar foe in the second round of the Flyers Cup. The Rams will take on Neshaminy, a 4-0 winner over Haverford, on Thursday.

#5 PENNSBURY 8, #12 ABINGTON 3
Brendan Macainsh makes scoring goals look oh so easy, and the Falcons’ standout reached an impressive milestone in Monday’s opening round win. Included in his four-goal performance was the 100th goal of a stellar career.
Justin Marlin’s five-point game (2 goals, 3 assists) led the Falcons, and Andrew Falkenstein added two goals and an assist.
The Falcons raced out of the gate to a 3-0 lead after one period. Falkenstein put Pennsbury on the board with a goal in the opening minutes, using a Marlin assist. Marlin and Macainsh followed with unassisted goals to close out the period.
Macainsh (Marlin assist) connected on a power play goal with 12:37 remaining in the second period before Sean Doyle scored with a Matthew Kramer assist to put the Ghosts on the scoreboard. Marlin answered with a goal for the Falcons just over a minute later, but Sam Abramson turned an Ian Heydt pass into a power play goal to make it a 5-2 game after two periods.
Falkenstein’s unassisted goal upped Pennsbury’s lead to 6-2, and a short-handed goal by Macainsh (Falkenstein assist) gave the Falcons a five-goal advantage. Patrick Stelacio’s power play goal with an assist from Owen Adamski with just over five minutes remaining made it a 7-3 game. Macainsh put the finishing touches on a big night with another short-handed goal – this one with a Marlin assist – to close out the scoring.
Aaron McDaniel turned away 28 shots in a winning effort in goal. Abington’s Sam Nemec was credited with 36 saves in the loss.

Kevin Koles scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead a balanced Golden Hawk attack in Tuesday’s Flyers Cup opener at Grundy. Bobby Gilbert also had a hat trick and chipped in an assist, and Blaize Pepe added two goals and an assist.
Gilbert (Evan Mostoller assist) scored a goal that turned out to be the game-winner with 8:50 remaining in the opening period. Pepe added a power play goal late, using assists from Chase Tovsky and Gilbert, and Rock South led 2-0 after one period.
The Golden Hawks put the game away with a six-goal explosion in the second period. The fun started with a goal from Pepe (Jake Maurer assist) and included a pair of goals by Gilbert – the second a power play goal. Adding single goals in the period were Jeremy Rayher, Koles (shorthanded) and Tovsky.
Koles added a pair of their-period goals to close out the scoring.
Carson Lopez turned away all nine shots he faced in the shutout win in goal.
Council Rock South will face Boyertown on Thursday (6:15 pm) at Hatfield Ice. Boyertown defeated Downingtown East 3-2 in Tuesday’s opening round.

The Patriots twice led by one goal early on in Tuesday’s opening round contest at Ice Line, but Avon Grove used a four-goal outburst in the second quarter to take a lead they would not lose.
Charlie Keiser scored midway through the opening period, using a Corey Kosick assist. Avon Grove knotted the score with 20 seconds remaining in the period when Nathan Crossan scored with an Ian D’Ambrosio assist.
The Patriots led 2-1 after David Brown scored on a power play less than three minutes in the second period. Kosick had his second assist on as many goals. Brendan Chandler scored the equalizer two minutes later, and Chandler’s power play goal with 11:17 remaining in the period gave Avon Grove a lead it would not lose.
Ethan Cenci scored with two-and-a-half minutes remaining in the period with assists from Keiser and Patrick O’Brien to make it a 5-3 game. The Patriots would get no closer.

Cael Primanti and Charlie Davis proved to be a dangerous combo in Tuesday’s Flyers Cup opener. The Wildcat duo combined for four goals – all by Primanti with Davis assists.
The Titans hung tough and found themselves deadlocked 2-2 until late in the second period. Primanti spotted the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with 10:59 remaining in the opening period, but Colin Mendham’s unassisted goal just over a minute later evened the score. Primanti’s second goal with seven minutes remaining sent OJR into the second period with a 2-1 lead.
Ryan Frey scored the equalizer with assists from Mendham and Aydin Thierolf early in the second, and that 2-2 tie stood until Kieran Coyne scored with 2:48 remaining, marking the beginning of a 3-0 OJR run to close out the game.
