Comments:
The story today was freshman Olivia Schlindwein’s 17 strikeout varsity debut. She was in complete control of the game from start to finish surrendering 2 hits, and 2 walks, among 17 strikeouts. Olivia was spinning the ball and making it dance all afternoon.
After jumping out to an early lead in the first inning, our offense really stagnated, and just wasn’t manufacturing runs. Wissahickon did a great job each inning of shutting things down and not allowing runners to cross the plate and hold our offense at bay. I was particularly impressed by Wissy’s third baseman who snagged a few hard hit balls headed for the 5-6 hole to squash any potential rally we looked to be starting. We stranded 8 runners in scoring position over the course of 7 innings, so improving on that will be a big focus moving forward as we prepare to enter league play.
Overall, for being as young as we are, I thought our girls did a nice job doing what they needed to do to secure a W on their opening day. You can never say it was a pretty win when you strand 8 runners in scoring position, but, they did what they had to do to finish on the right side of the scoreboard, so kudos to them for that. We had 8 freshman play a roll in today’s win (none more than Olivia’s 17 K performance over a team that scored 13 runs in their season opener), so we are optimistic for the growth of this group as we continue to learn and address the things we know we can do better each day.
