“Both of these fine young men left a tremendous mark on the program and me as a coach,” UM coach Jim Fasano said. “They will be successful in college and contributing members of society as adults. I expect to have their numbers retired on our outfield fence one day soon.”

Jimmy Torpey – Penn State Abington (Baseball)
Final list of colleges:
Penn State Abington, Elizabethtown, Chestnut Hill
Reasons for choosing Penn State Abington: “I really liked the vibe, and I felt it was somewhere I could get a really good education first and somewhere I could contribute to the baseball team right away.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “When I started to pitch in middle school, I started to realize that I loved it. It was something I was really good at, and it immediately became a dream of mine.”
Coach Jim Fasano says: “Jimmy Torpey had one of the finest high school seasons I have ever seen. He had an ERA of 0.6 and hit over .300. He is not only an outstanding ballplayer but an even better person - the kid who stays after practice to fix the mound and holds his own optional BP on Sundays. He is going to have an awesome career at PSUA and leaves a legacy as perhaps the best pitcher in recent school history.”

Shawn Townsend - Penn College of Technology (Baseball)
Major:
Welding & Metal Fabrication
Reasons for choosing Penn College:  “I went to tech school for half a day the last two years, and it felt like the right choice to continue this field of work.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I thought since my sophomore year playing in summer tournaments and everything that I wanted to play college baseball.”
Coach Jim Fasano says: Shawn Townsend and Torpey are great friends, from great families, and share many of the same characteristics as human beings. Shawn stole 20 bases this year in addition to hitting over .400 and playing virtually flawless defense at shortstop. Shawn is fun to be around while taking baseball seriously, and he is a tremendous leader. Penn College of Technology is getting a player who can do everything well on the field and will also stay after practice to fix the field.”
