PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

If week one of the 2023 season was the “Week of the Bucks,” week two was the “Week of the Panthers.” Quakertown – after dropping its first game of the season to Southern Lehigh – bounced back to stun North Penn 38-17. It was the program’s first win over North Penn since 1979. The Panthers, who lost to North Penn 49-7 last season, survived not only a Knights’ kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening play of the game, they also didn’t flinch when the Knights rallied from a 25-7 deficit to make it a 25-18 game with a touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half. Quakertown’s defense did not allow a point in the second half while its offense put a pair of touchdowns on the scoreboard.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Vince Micucci, Quakertown – The Panthers’ senior quarterback threw for 200 yards and a program record five touchdowns in Quakertown’s 38-17 win over North Penn, completing 11 of 17 pass attempts (.647) for a QB rating of 120.1. Four of his TD passes came in a first half that saw the Panthers open up a 25-17 halftime lead, but Micucci brought much more than that to the table. With the Knights trailing by eight and momentum threatening to swing in their favor, Micucci – on fourth-and-10 at the Knights’ 36-yard line – ran 12 yards first down to the 24. On the ensuing series, the Panthers’ QB – on second-and-eight – ran for another huge first down to the 14. That set the stage for Micucci, who had 38 yards on seven carries, finding Max Moore in the corner of the end zone with a six-yard TD pass that - after the extra point – put the Panthers on top 35-17 on their way to the huge win. It was Moore’s second touchdown catch of the game – his first for 44 yards made it a 7-6 game after the Knights took an early 7-0 lead.
Coach George Banas says: “For Vince to play at such a high level the day after losing his best buddy (his lifelong pet dog Maclin) was astonishing. He set a school record with five touchdown throws. He escaped the defense on more than one occasion that got us first downs. He is an all-around great kid, and some team at the next level is going to get one heck of a player and person on their team.”
