SOL Continental Conference
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 3, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 1 (25-13, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21)
The Titans notched a hard fought win in a battle of the neighboring schools.
Sophomore setter Carly Scott handed out 15 assists to go along with three aces, two kills and five digs. Freshman libero Olivia Hessenthaler led the defense with 15 digs and also had three assists. Contributing to a balanced attack were junior outside hitter Lauren Marsland (11 kills, 5 digs), sophomore middle Lane McLaughlin (7 kills, 6 blocks, 2 digs), junior outside hitter Madison Zagnojny (6 kills, 4 digs) and senior opposite Ally Schiesser (6 kills, 3 digs). Senior defensive specialist Julia Lucci added eight digs, one ace and one kill.
The Patriots received contributions from athletes across the board. Mia Mettille (27 assists, 3 kills, 3 aces, 3 digs, 2 blocks) had a great all-around match. On offense, the balanced attack was led by Catie Tomlinson (10 kills, 8 digs, 1 ace), Sophia Schwartz (8 kills), and Regina Mathur (4 kills, 7 digs, 1 ace). Arya Haridas (17 digs, 2 aces) anchored the defense, along with Abi Zmuda (6 digs, 2 aces). In addition, the “Fab 3 Freshmen” of Ali Minacci (6 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs), Summer Darling (5 kills, 1 dig) and Brynne Vonder Schmalz (3 aces, 1 dig) all made meaningful contributions.
Central Bucks South (4-8, 2-5 SOL) will travel to Quakertown on Thursday, and Central Bucks East (1-9, 1-6) will be on the road at Souderton on Thursday.
NORTH PENN 3, SOUDERTON 1 (25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 25-20)
The visiting Knights earned a four-set win over the Indians.
For the Indians, Margaret Donnelly had 23 assists, seven digs, one ace and one block. Kay Guessford led the attack with 14 kills and 12 digs. Zoe Folk led the defense with 17 digs as well as six service aces and one assist. McKenna Murawski had 12 kills, 12 digs, five aces and one block. Also contributing were Emma Conklin (2 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks) and Stella Powers (6 assists, 1 ace, 8 digs).
North Penn (4-6, 4-3 SOL) will host Central Bucks West on Thursday, and Souderton (8-5, 4-3) will host Central Bucks East on Thursday.
SOL American Conference
ABINGTON 3, HATBORO-HORSHAM 0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-12)
Iris Winegrad found herself in an unexpected role in Tuesday’s road match, moving from defensive specialist to setter. She heard the news just hours before the match.
“On the way back from Wawa after school today, our setter was in a car accident,” Abington coach Dan Marsh said of Mary Carter. “She didn’t tell me – she didn’t look right, and everyone looked at me, and they finally tell me.
“Iris has been our libero for three years, but this year she’s been a DS. I said, ‘Well, Iris, you’re going to have to set.’ We had never prepared for this, and she did great. I’m just super proud of her. To beat Hatboro 3-0 under these conditions is more than a moral victory.”
Winegrad finished with 12 assists, three aces and three digs in a strong outing, and if it seems as though she might have been nervous, she says she wasn’t.
“I set during club two years ago,” she said. “I set in tournaments before. It was definitely an adjustment, but it wasn’t anything super new.
“It was a team effort obviously. Everyone just stepped up, so that helped a lot.”
Elle Pennekamp led the Ghosts in kills and also had one block. Liz Tanis had four kills and one block.
Abington (9-2, 5-2 SOL) will travel to Upper Dublin on Wednesday, and Hatboro-Horsham (2-7, 2-5) will be on the road at New Hope-Solebury on Thursday.
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3, UPPER DUBLIN 2
The Colonials earned the hard-fought win to remain perfect atop the SOL American Conference standings.
For the Flying Cardinals, Brooke Kinsley led the attack with 17 kills to go along with 11 digs and one assist. Madison Small had 10 kills, two aces, two assists and three digs. Alisa Zeng led the defense with 30 digs and also had one kill, one ace and four assists. Setter Kaitlyn Small had 27 assists, three kills, two aces and 11 digs. Also contributing were Janis Andrulonis (6 kills, 1 ace, 7 digs, 3 blocks), Shanley Joyce (3 kills, 2 blocks) and Isabelle Driehuis (2 kills, 1 assist, 4 digs, 3 blocks).
Plymouth Whitemarsh (7-1, 7-0 SOL) will travel to Haverford for a non-league game on Thursday, and Upper Dublin (6-4, 5-2) will host Abington on Wednesday.
