SOL Wrestlers Advance to Quarterfinals

Hershey, PA-Twelve Suburban One League wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals at the Giant Center Thursday night while others dropped down into the wrestle-backs and will wait for their opponents until Friday afternoon starting at 2:15pm along with the quarterfinalists. Hatboro-Horsham freshman Dom Morrison won his first bout in Chocolate Town, USA, at 107-pounds with a hard-earned win over Hempfield Area’s Nico Kapusta 7-1. Council Rock North’s Alex Diaz won his first bout in the pigtails but dropped a tight match to Cedar Cliff’s Aiden Herndon 1-0. Herndon is just a freshman who was the South Central champ. The 107-pound weight class is loaded with young talent.
Pennridge’s Colby Martinelli started his run at a state-title with a 19-4 tech-fall over Downingtown West’s Chase Sigle. Two SOL grapplers advanced to the quarters at 121-pounds as #1 seed Mason Ziegler (Quakertown) started his mission to the top of the podium with a fall, and Luke Reitter (CR South) looks like he did when he medaled two years ago as he took out Jackson Orwell from Red Lion 4-2. CR North’s Eren Sement was perfect in his third trip to Hershey with an 18-0 tech-fall and will see Easton’s Chris Kelly Friday in the quarters. Patrick Kelly (Central Bucks West) kept it going at 139-pounds coming off a Southeast Regional title last weekend with a first-round win over Northern York’s Rocco Fratelli 4-2. Moving through the middle, Gavin Carrol at 145 was the second of four Panthers to advance to the quarterfinals. Teammate Collin Gaj secured a fall at 152, adding bonus points for Quakertown as he looks to become a two-timer here in Hershey. Pennridge had their second quarterfinalist here in Sam Kuhns, but he must take on the defending 152-pound champ Kollin Rath from Bethlehem Catholic who has one loss at 42-1.
CR South’s Gavin Cole just continues to roll along and earned a quarterfinal matchup with Pottsville’s Nick Kunstek at 160-pounds. Cole posted a fall for the Golden Hawks, and teammate Bekhruz Sadriddinov advanced from his #1 seed as he too looks for gold at 172. Big man Calvin Lachman added more bonus for Quakertown with his major decision 14-3 over Wyatt Maines from Hollidaysburg, which put the Panthers on top of the team standings after first-round action.
Quakertown heads into day-two action two-points off the team lead with 23-points to Nazareth’s 25. Pennridge sits in the eight-hole with 17.5-points with all six of its grapplers entered in the tourney alive. CR South rounds out the top-10 with 16-points. South’s Ajay Bhatt and Ben Brillhart were eliminated with two-losses each, so the Golden Hawks are down to four wrestlers, Q-town still has their fab-five. Hatboro-Horsham has two wrestlers still on the climb to the podium, as Chris Staub recorded a fall in his first-round consi-match after dropping down with a first-round loss in his first trip to Chocolate Town and will join Morrison tomorrow in day-two action.
