SOL Boys' Soccer Wrap (8-28-24)

Check out the recaps for SOL boys’ soccer teams in action Wednesday.

Non-league
HATBORO-HORSHAM 2, PENNRIDGE 0

The visiting Hatters broke a scoreless tie with three minutes remaining in an evenly played first half when Logan Clayton converted a penalty kick.
A goal by Logan Gisondi early in the second half gave the Hatters a 2-0 lead that held the rest of the way.
For the Rams, Wednesday’s game came on the heels of a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Boyertown one day earlier in sweltering heat.
Scoring summary
First half
Logan Clayton (HH) penalty kick 377th minute 1-0
Second half
Logan Gisondi (HH) 51st minute, 2-0
Coach Kyle McGrath:
--The game:
“It was a back and forth in the first half with both teams having chances. We knew that they were coming off a game last night, so we were hoping to take advantage of that. Pennridge came out very strong, which we were expecting, but it was also a little bit of a surprise considering the conditions. Both teams had chances in the first half until we had the penalty kick.”
--Scoring recap: “The first goal of the game was in the 37th minute – Logan Clayton scored on a penalty kick. We kind of broke on the counterattack. Miller Kahmar picked the ball up and was able to slice through one or two of their defenders, and as he was making a move toward goal, he got clipped from behind and drew the penalty kick.
“Logan Gisondi scored in the 51st minute. He turned the Pennridge defender over, took a touch and hit a shot the goalkeeper got a hand on but was still able to go into the net.”
--Props: “We’re still working on our back four and who’s going to play for us this year. Tonight, it was Luis Matullo, Will Fisher, Luke Weiss and Christian Patelmo. Those guys anchored the back line with Sawyer Cruz in goal, and we were able to get our first shutout and really withstand a lot of pressure. After we went up 2-0, Pennridge threw a bunch of numbers forward to try and score. We had to defend restarts and long throw-ins, which they’re very dangerous at, and we were able to do that.”
Coach Aaron Rapinski: “Props to Coach Kyle and his players. They stepped up and finished their opportunities. Hatboro-Horsham scored a penalty with three minutes to go in the first half. Then they scored 10 minutes into the second half with a great shot from outside the box.
“It was tough coming off an overtime loss just 24 hours ago. My guys fought hard and got into good spots, but we just couldn’t find the back of the net.”
Next up: Hatboro-Horsham (1-1) will host Abington in its SOL opener next Wednesday.
Pennridge (0-2) will travel to Souderton on Wednesday for its league opener.

COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5, WILLIAM TENNENT 0
Logan Lentz connected for a hat trick, propelling the Indians to a convincing win over the visiting Panthers. Wentz scored five minutes into the game, and the Indians never looked back.
It would have been understandable if the Indians had shown signs of fatigue after earning a hard-fought 2-1 win over Penn Charter one day earlier in the sweltering heat. That didn’t happen. They opened up a 2-0 halftime lead and added three more goals early in the second half. After that, the game pretty much belonged to the respective benches.
Scoring summary
First half
Landon Wentz (CRN) from Corey Brennan 1-0
Will Kamp (CRN) from Isaac Morais 2-0
Second half
Logan Adams from Will Kamp (CRN) 3-0
Landon Wentz (CRN) 4-0
Landon Wentz (CRN) penalty kick 5-0
Assistant coach Brian Hoffman:
“In the second half, we pretty much dominated play. I think the one thing that’s going to come in handy, and it’s not that different from our situation last year is – our depth is really going to wear on teams, and we’re going to be a lot fresher than many teams are. When you can go 17 or 18 deep – if it’s a team that once you put your third sub on - that guy is at a huge weakness. Our team really doesn’t have that much drop-off, no matter who we’re putting out there.
“Credit to our guys doing the work in the offseason, really working on improving themselves. I do think we could be a little bit fitter. Having the next guy up on the bench hides that factor to a degree.”
--Props: “You can’t take anything away from Landon Wentz scoring three goals. Darek Miller, our center back, has been playing really well. He keeps everybody calm and directed. Will Kamp was the one that won the penalty kick for Landon Wentz to make. His work rate has been really, really good.”
Up next: Council Rock North (2-0) will host Archbishop Wood in a non-league game Friday (10:30 am).
William Tennent (0-3) will travel to Upper Moreland for Wednesday’s SOL opener.

ABINGTON 2, SPRING-FORD 0
The Ghosts rebounded from a disappointing 1-0 loss to neighboring Cheltenham with a strong showing in a win over the visiting Rams.
For a while, it looked like neither team was going to score, but with 15 minutes remaining in regulation Daniel Oliveira found the back of the net. Liam Malanowski added a late goal.
“We made it a lot more difficult than it was,” Abington coach Randy Garber said. “We finally put the ball in the back of the net, which we haven’t done in a while.
“We have a challenge at Archbishop Ryan on Friday night. It should be a good one.”
Scoring Summary
First half
No score
Second half
Danny Oliveira (A) 1-0
Liam Malanowski (A) from Sebastian Morina 2-0
Coach Randy Garber:
“Spring-Ford is very good. They have very good size, they’re well organized. They pretty much gave us at least half or sometimes three-quarters of the field, and then they played defense in the final third, and they were very good at it.
“Their goalkeeper was absolutely a standout. He did a phenomenal job. He kind of controlled the back. He was one of the captains. He was one of the reasons why we had trouble scoring goals. He pretty much won everything that we put in the box and controlled his defense to the point where he probably touched the ball as much as any of his defenders did. He did a really nice job. He was the best player on the field for them, for sure.”
--How they scored: “Danny Oliveira scored probably 20 minutes into the second half. We moved him from the back to the front. He got behind and hit a ball from 18-19 yards out along the floor and just beat the goalkeeper. It was a hard drive. The goalkeeper made a nice effort, but the pace that he put on the ball – it got by him.
“Our second goal was after the water break late in the second half, and it changed the whole complexion of the game. Obviously, they weren’t going to win the game unless they scored a goal, so they came out and actually started putting pressure on us. It wasn’t until late in the game – with less than 10 minutes to go, they started to push up, and we got behind their defense, and scored the second goal with probably five minutes to go. Liam Malanowski is a senior forward, and he did a nice job. He was one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and he just slid it underneath him. He did a very nice job. Sebastian Morina had the assist. We finally put the ball in the back of the net
--Props: “Nikki Gray did a nice job. Sean Westmoreland did an outstanding job in the midfield. Owen Gesing did a nice job in the defense. Both Sean and Owen are sophomores. Also Kyle Kretschman. Our defense had a clean sheet – they did well.”
Next up: Abington (1-1) will travel to Archbishop Ryan Friday for a non-league match at 7:30 p.m.

NORTH PENN 3, HOLY GHOST PREP 2
The Knights continued their ambitious early season schedule with a trip to Holy Ghost Prep Wednesday night. They received a late goal from Ian Balisalisa (Carson Schell assist) to win it, and this one was anything but easy.
Fion Regan contributed a goal and assist, and Ahmaar Godhannian put the Knights on the board with an early goal.
“This was our third road game in five days, and we don’t even get a day to rest and enjoy that win, because we host Neshaminy (Thursday) night,” coach Chris DePeppo said.
Scoring Summary
First half
Ahmaar Godhanian (NP) from Fion Regan 1-0
Holy Ghost goal 1-1
Fion Regan (NP) 2-1
Second half
Holy Ghost goal 2-2
Ian Balisalisa (NP) from Carson Schell 3-2
Coach Chris DePeppo
“We need to play with more patience and composure, and we have to make better decisions in the final third, but any time you can get in and out of Northeast Philly with three points is a good day. We have scored six goals in our last two games - with six different goal scorers. Now I’d like to see us post a few shutouts on our home turf. “
--The game: “After scoring the first goal just a couple of minutes in on Ahmaar Godhanian’s header from a Fionn Regan free kick, I thought we might have smooth sailing, but in the end, we were very fortunate to get out of there with the win.
“Holy Ghost came right back and scored a great counterattacking goal to tie the game. After that we settled down and controlled play for a spell. Fion Regan scored to give us the lead, but HGP were scrappy and very fast in transition.  Their pitch is too small honestly, so it’s tough to find space or keep possession.
“I knew we needed to have a strong first ten minutes of the second half, but instead, we allowed them to even the score immediately - and that was all the inspiration they needed to battle to the end.  So, we did not have our best outing, but we hung in and finally found the game-winner, thanks to the hard work of junior Carson Schell who kept the ball in play on the end line and slipped a low ball into the goalmouth where senior captain Ian Balisalisa was able to poke it home. But it still took some heroics from goalkeeper Brady Schwengels (junior) ,including one point-black save with 15 to play. Both teams had a player shown the red card.”
--Props: “Fion. Regan had another outstanding night, as did our back line of Ahmaar, Nino Brnardic, Ryan Smith and Eoin Regan. I thought junior Carson Schell lifted us up coming in off the bench.  i know he has a powerful shot, but he didn’t get many chances, so it was more about his willingness to do the dirty work and put their center backs under pressure. “Senior captain Demetri Ilovski played all 80 minutes yet again, and he continues to be our best player.”

LOWER MORELAND 7, JENKINTOWN 0
The Lions won their second game in as many outings, and they did it in convincing fashion over a young Drakes’ squad.
“Jenkintown is a young team with a coach who is trying to get them to play football the right way,” LM coach Bob Barnhart said. “It was a hot one today, so we really cycled through our bench.
“Everyone on the roster got minutes today especially since we are playing on Friday and getting ready to go into league play. We are rounding into form, and we are excited to get our league schedule underway.”
Up next: Lower Moreland (2-0) will travel to Calvary Christian Academy for a non-league game Friday (7 pm).
