The Ghosts were eager to take the field for their first game of the season, and they made it worth the wait, earning the hard-fought win.
Abington scored a pair of goals in the second quarter – one each from Maeve Link and Janice Coonahan – to go on top 2-0. That score stood until Hatboro-Horsham’ s MacKenzie Harmon scored a fourth-quarter goal for the 2-1 final.

Coach Janine Larr on the win: “It was a great team win for us today!  After working hard in practice this past week on things we knew we needed to improve on, the girls came out ready to play.  They really started to gel as a team and in their respective positions today, which was nice to see.  I’m very proud of how everyone played, and stepped up, to record a nice team win.”
--How they scored: “Junior center mid Maeve Link scored the first goal of the game, unassisted in the second quarter, and  junior forward Janice Coonahan quickly followed with another unassisted goal to put Abington up 2-0 at the half.  Hatboro Horsham was able to answer in the fourth quarter with a goal, but Abington was able to hold them off to record the win in their first game of the season.”
--Props: “Maeve Link stepped up big today and helped set the tempo of the game for us. She had a hand in both offensive and defensive plays, which were key to getting the win.
“Janice Coonahan also worked hard on the offensive end, and her breakaway one-on-one goal showed her desire and ability to put the ball in the net.
“Junior forward Brooke Dougherty also played a key role and was an offensive catalyst by helping get the ball up the field and into Hatboro's circle.  Her speed and hustle allowed us to get many offensive opportunities.
“Sophomore defensive back Morgan Gillette stepped up on the defensive end and made two huge plays to prevent Hatboro from getting the ball in the net.  Senior midfielder, Sophia Afflisio also made some key plays in the midfield, to help prevent Hatboro from getting scoring opportunities.
Senior goalie Caitlin Murcar recorded four saves in the first half, while sophomore goalie, Keely Gallagher recorded three clutch saves in the second half, to preserve the win.”
Hatboro-Horsham coach Marie Schmucker on the game: “We had seven corners, but we just couldn’t capitalize. “We made mistakes today, and one directly led to a goal. Sophomore Mackenzie Harmon scored a goal in the fourth from senior Sarah Kim, and we started to generate offense, but it was too late.”
Next up: Abington (1-0 SOL) will host Upper Dublin Tuesday, and Hatboro-Horsham (1-1, 0-1) will host Quakertown Tuesday.

A goal by Cami Lutte from Kayla Mullin gave the Trojans an early 1-0 lead, but the visiting Patriots had an immediate answer. With 3:43 remaining in the opening quarter, Katie Szczypiorski scored on a penalty stroke.
No one could have guessed that neither team would score again the rest of the way, but that’s exactly what happened. Not even an overtime could determine a winner, and the two teams were forced to settle for a 1-1 tie.
“Both teams played very hard for the entire game,” Wiss coach Lee Ann Marchesi said.
East coach Emma Rosenthal on the game: “We carried the momentum we finished last night’s game with into today. But we accomplished today what we couldn’t do the past two games - we got on the board. I would have loved to walk out of the game with a win, but I’m very happy with the hard-fought 70-minute game.”
--Props: “Bella Craig did a great job in goal with 12 saves. Anna Daly, Avery McCann, and Aly McIsaac had some really nice plays in the midfield that gave us a great offensive push.”
Next up: Wissahickon (2-1-1, 1-0 SOL) will host Plymouth Whitemarsh on Tuesday, and Central Bucks East (0-3-1, 0-1 SOL) will host Pennridge Tuesday (7 p.m.)
