Upper Moreland hosted Cheltenham in an SOL Freedom league competition on the grounds of Upper Moreland Middle School.  Both the boys and girls from Cheltenham pulled out the victories against the Golden Bears.
Cheltenham took the top three spots in the boys’ race, and their top girl won the girls’ race.

“I was happy with the way our kids competed,” UM coach Doug Smith said. “Cheltenham has some very good runners, and our boys and girls went out and ran hard."
Christian Feil(4th) and 'Chicken' Saunders (5th) were Upper Moreland's top finishers for the boys, followed by John Cox (8th), Luciano Tang (9th) and Kanstantsin Pronin (11th) rounded out UM's scorers while Melody McDonough (2nd), Ellie Harter (3rd) and Iyana Johnson (5th) were the top finishers for the girls.

"This was our first race of the season,” Smith said. “Actually the first ever Cross Country race for 5 or 6 of our student-athletes, and I am very proud of the way they competed and how they ran.

“We (Coach Teri, Coach Chante and myself) told them to go out and compete, do not worry about time but go out and race.  They did and those that ran last year - they are pretty close to where they ended last season after the first race of the season.  Love that!"

Cheltenham's top 3 boys - Caleb, Sham and Will - ran a very smart race together and put enough distance between themselves and Upper Moreland's top runners and after taking 1,2 and 3 the meet result was almost a forgone conclusion.

The top spot in the girls race was a back and forth battle between UM's McDonough and Cheltenham's 9th grader Abby Edgar.  Edgar made a strong move with about 3/4 of a mile remaining and earned the SOL League meet victory.  McDonough's second place finishing time was less than 30 seconds off of her XC personal best.

Strong start for both Cheltenham and Upper Moreland
