SOL National Conference
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 3, WILLIAM TENNENT 2 (25-11, 23-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-5)
For the third time in as many matches, the Indians were extended to five sets by the Panthers. Rock North has won two of the three, including Thursday night's, but the Panthers didn’t make this one easy.
"In what seems to be a bi-seasonal understanding, Council Rock North and Tennent will play five sets - this was no different last night," Rock North coach Joe Schweitzer said.
CRN was led by Olivia Szymkiewicz with 19 kills with five aces, Sloane Jordan with 16 kills, with six aces and Addison Zarillo pitched in 11 kills. Sophomore Macallan Vogel added six aces with some very solid serve receive. Sarah McCafferty added 35 assists while Marcela Roszko added eight assists.
For the Panthers, setter Izzy Goebel had 34 assists and five aces. Margaux Kellum (17 digs) and Aubrey Lynch (12 digs) led the defense. The Panthers boasted a triple threat at the net with Ava Stracuzzi, Lauren Marsland and Kristina Bensionova each delivering 10 kills. Bentsionova also had four blocks.
“The girls did a great job of rebounding after really rough sets in 1 and 3 in order to push the match to five sets against a strong Council Rock North team that featured two big hitters on the outside,” Tennent coach Brian Bassler said. “We need more consistency moving forward because when our girls are passing well out of serve receive and playing tough, scrappy defense, we are tough to beat.”
Council Rock North (6-4, 5-1 SOL) will host Council Rock South on Tuesday, and William Tennent (5-5, 2-4) will host Harry S Truman on Tuesday.
NESHAMINY 3, BENSALEM 1 (25-18, 13-25, 25-9, 25-13)
The Redskins split the first two sets with the visiting Owls but won the next two to earn the four-set win.
For the Owls, Dene Howe led the defense with 20 digs. Setter Talia DiMichele dished out 23 assists and also had 18 digs, two aces and one block. Evette Wesseh led the attack with 14 kills, and Jordan Domansky was strong at the net with eight kills and one block.
Neshaminy (6-4, 3-2 SOL) will host Council Rock South Friday, and Bensalem (3-8,1-5) will host Central Bucks South in a non-league match Monday.
PENNSBURY 3, HARRY S TRUMAN 0
SOL Continental Conference
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 3, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2 (25-20, 13-25, 21-25, 25-21, 18-16)
This is one rivalry match that rarely disappoints. It certainly didn’t on Thursday night as West rallied from a 2-1 deficit to earn the hard-fought win.
For the Bucks, Kya Lynch turned in a monster performance at the net, delivering 27 kills and 10 blocks to go along with 24 digs. Emily Ferrese (29 digs) led the Bucks’ defense while Ava Streibig added 13 digs, two blocks and one kill. Erinn McCusker led a strong serving game for the Bucks with four aces. She also had two kills, five assists and nine digs. Setter Elisa Kremser dished out 23 assists and also had three blocks and 14 digs.
For the Patriots, Ali Minacci was an absolute beast at the net, delivering 17 kills to go along with nine blocks, and Mia Mettille posted an impressive overall stat line (17 assists, 10 digs, 5 kills, 2 blocks, 2 service aces). The team also benefited from strong contributions from their two senior all-around outside hitters, with Regina Mathur posting a stat line of nine kills, nine digs, four services aces, two blocks and two assists, followed closely by Sophia Schwartz (10 kills, 6 digs, 2 blocks, 2 assists). Also getting in on the fun were Brynne Vonder Schmalz (19 assists, 12 digs, 4 service aces) and Reese Coxey (5 blocks, 2 kills). The back row ‘law firm’ of Haridas and O'Brien made one outstanding play after another, with Arya Haridas registering 35 digs and Carmyn O'Brien tallying 15 digs.
“In what is becoming more than just a habit, the Lady Patriots found themselves in another grueling five-set match, this time against their crosstown rivals at CB West,” East coach Andy Helveston said. “Unfortunately, (we) were unable to prevail on this night and came up just short.
“The match featured some amazing back and forth action, with each team seeming to outdo each other with timely hitting, great saves, and high pressure serving.”
Central Bucks West (4-7, 4-2 SOL) will host Conestoga in a non-league match Saturday at 12 noon. Central Bucks East (3-7, 2-4) will travel to North Penn on Tuesday.
SOUDERTON 3, QUAKERTOWN 2 (15-25, 25-20, 14-25, 26-24, 15-6)
The Indians dropped the first and third sets and trailed 2-1 but eked out a win in a hard-fought third set, going on to win in five in a gutsy effort.
Lauren Vince led the Indians at the net with 13 kills to go along with five aces and seven digs. Kylie Okeefe added nine kills and one dig while Emma Conklin (6 kills, 3 blocks) and Lily Self (5 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces) were also a force. Stella Powers (18 assists, 2 aces, 5 kills, 1 block, 7 digs) and Caroline Bache (19 assists, 5 digs) shared setting duties. Zoe Folk’s 29 digs led the defense. She also had one ace. Ella Rothenberger added two kills and one block.
For the Panthers, setter Genevieve Clark had a busy night, contributing 31 assists, four aces, two kills, one block and 15 digs. Krysalyn Juchno (18 kills, 1 block, 5 digs) and Ellie White (13 kills, 4 blocks, 1 dig) had big nights at the net. Colleen Gallagher led the defense with 24 digs to go along with two aces. Zoe Hartley (19 digs, 3 aces, 1 kills), Kaeli Scheliga (12 digs, 2 aces) and Meghan Steiert (10 digs, 1 ace) also played key roles on defense.
Souderton (6-3, 3-3 SOL) will host Mount St. Joseph Academy in a non-league match Friday, and Quakertown (3-6, 1-5) will travel to Saucon Valley for a non-league match Tuesday.
PENNRIDGE 3, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 0
The Lady Rams maintained their stronghold on the top spot in the conference standings with a sweep of the host Titans.
Middle hitter Chloe Wint dominated on defense at the net while adding 8 kills on 12 swings. Pin hitters Caitlin Kuntz, Melissa Hinkson, and Sloane Gochin combined for an additional 27 kills set up by the dynamic setting duo of Aubrie Schulz and Delaney Schwind (31 assists combined). Libero Shannon Leo tallied 33 digs to anchor the Rams’ stellar defense while contributing to the teams 11 aces (Leo 2, Schwind 5, Kuntz 4).
Pennridge (11-0, 6-0 SOL) will be on the road for a non-league match at Lansdale Catholic on Monday. Central Bucks South (4-7, 2-4) will travel to Bensalem for a non-league match Monday.
SOL American Conference
ABINGTON 3, NEW HOPE-SOLEBURY 1 (25-21, 25-15, 11-25, 25-17)
The Ghosts picked up a road win over the Lions in four sets.
For the Ghosts, setter Mary Carter was credited with 35 assists. Sasha Moody was on the receiving end of many of those, finishing with 20 assists. Sofie Heininger added 12 kills, and Maddie Peltzer had six.
Abington (7-2, 6-1 SOL) will travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh Tuesday, and New Hope-Solebury (8-4, 4-4) will travel to MaST Community Charter for a non-league game Friday.
PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3, WISSAHICKON 0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-18)
PW swept Wissahickon to rise to 8-2 on the season while earning Coach Stewart his 200th career win.
PW was led by Amanda Busk with 13 kills, Eliza Meersman with 5 kills and 3 blocks, Chloe Mamrosch with 6 aces and 7 assists, and Brooke Peduzzi with 2 aces and 10 assists.
PW looks to improve their record on Saturday as they host WC East.
