National Conference
Council Rock South 3, Pennsbury 1 (25-16-, 21-25, 25-8, 25-19)
Council Rock South remained undefeated in league play as it earned a 3-1 victory over National Division foe Pennsbury on Thursday.
Council Rock South coach Kelly Korn: “Serving strong for the Hawks were seniors Nala Kauer, Halle Wilson, and Rahee Patel. The offense was led by Olivia DeSaro and Nala Kauer with assists by Emelie Korn and Olivia DeSaro.
“Pennsbury’s powerful offense was met with consistent defensive plays from South. Our focus on flexibility and teamwork continue to buoy the Hawks through tough moments.”
Next up: South (10-0 National, 14-3 overall) will host Bensalem at 3:30 pm Tuesday. Pennsbury (6-2, 10-4) will host William Tennent at 7 pm Tuesday.
Bensalem 3, Harry S Truman 0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-17)
Talia DiMichele dished out a balanced attack with 22 assists, 9 digs, and 5 aces to help lead Bensalem to a straight-set victory over Harry S Truman in Thursday’s National Division matchup. The team went on timely serving runs, tallying 18 aces.
Maci McKernan led the Owls’ attack with 9 kills. Evette Wesseh contributed 6 kills while Jordan Domansky added 5 kills.
Next up: Bensalem (1-8, 3-14 overall) will visit Council Rock South at 3:30 pm Tuesday. Truman (0-9, 4-9) visits Villa Joseph Marie at 3:45 pm Saturday.
Continental Conference
Quakertown 3, Central Bucks West 0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19)
Genevieve Clark dished out 22 assists to go along with 2 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace, and 9 digs as Quakertown earned a straight set win over Central Bucks West in Thursday’s Continental Division game.
Krysalyn Juchno came up with 8 kills, 4 aces, 4 digs for the Panthers, who received solid efforts from Ellie White (6 kills, 3 aces, 1 block), Rachel White (5 kills, 2 digs), Alex Laco (4 kills, 1 block, 3 digs), Gianna Santangelo (2 kills, 1 block, 2 digs), Colleen Gallagher (1 kill, 2 aces, 11 digs), Zoe Hartley (1 kill, 12 digs), Kaeli Scheliga (5 digs), and Meghan Steiert (1 ace, 4 digs).
Kya Lynch had 13 kills, 1 block, and 8 digs for West. Elisa Kremser contributed 1 ace, 1 kill, 1 block, 14 assists, and 4 digs. Erinn McCusker had 1 ace, 2 kills, 3 assists, and 5 digs; Keeley Fialkowski drilled 2 aces and added 3 blocks; and Emily Ferrese contributed 12 digs.
Next up: Quakertown (3-6 Continental, 8-7 overall) will host Pennridge on Senior Night at 6:30 pm Tuesday. West (7-3, 9-9) will host Gwynedd Mercy Academy on at 6:30 pm Tuesday, then visit neighborhood rival Central Bucks East at 6 pm Thursday.
Continental Division
Central Bucks East 3, Pennridge 2
Central Bucks East rallied from dropping the first two sets and swept the next three to pull out a stunning five-set victory in Thursday’s Continental Conference matchup, handing the Rams their first league loss of the season.
Central Bucks East coach Andy Helveston: “Rather than giving up and mailing in the third set, they played their most inspired and passionate team volleyball of the season and came away with a hard-fought five-set victory against the best team in the conference.”
Starting the comeback: “The rally all started with the defense, where the law firm of Haridas (28 digs), O'Brien (11 digs) and Zmuda (10 digs) took over and kept extending points. Those great passes allowed the two setters (Mia Mettille and Brynne Vonder Schmalz) to distribute over 15 sets each while also chipping in on defense with over 10 digs each.”
Attacking on offense: “The senior outside hitters were once again the focal point of the offense, with Sophia Schwartz (11 kills) and Regina Mathur (9 kills to go along with 16 digs) making huge contributions across the board. Ali Minacci (5 kills, 3 blocks, and 3 digs) and Reese Coxey (5 kills and 1 block) also made solid contributions to the victory.”
Next up: The Patriots (4-6 Continental, 6-11 overall) will visit Cheltenham for a 6 pm Monday matchup. Pennridge (9-1, 16-2) will look to get back to its winning ways in a road game at Quakertown at 6:30 pm Tuesday.
American Division
Abington 3, Wissahickon 0
Non-league
Gwynedd Mercy 3, Souderton 1 (25-19, 17-25, 25-13, 25-19)
Souderton won the second set to even the match at 1-1, but Gwynedd-Mercy Academy took the next two to pull away with a four-set (19-25, 25-17, 13-25, 19-25) victory over the Big Red in Thursday’s nonleague matchup.
Lauren Vince had 5 aces, 15 kills, and 8 digs for Souderton; Lily Self recorded 1 ace, 5 kills, 10 digs; Zoe Folk had 1 ace, 1 kill, 19 digs, 2 assists; Stella Powers registered 2 aces, 19 assists, 9 digs; Kylie Okeefe added 8 kills and 2 digs; and Caroline Bache had 7 assists and 3 digs.
Next up: Souderton (8-9 overall, 3-7 Continental) will visit North Penn at 6:30 pm Tuesday.
Wednesday, October 9
Council Rock North 3, Pennsbury 0
Council Rock North defeated Pennsbury 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-12) in a huge National Division matchup on Thursday that was far closer than the straight sets would appear.
North was led by Olivia Szymkiewicz with 14 kills and 3 aces, Sloane Jordan with 8 kills, and Addison Zarillo with 4 kills and 3 aces. Senior Sarah McCafferty ran a very efficient offense, dishing out 29 assists. None of the assists or kills would have been possible without some great serve receive by Ava Liedl, who passed a 2.3 on 18 attempts.
Council Rock North coach Joe Schweitzer: “Here is the thing – these two teams know each other very well, many of them play club together, so there are very few surprises when we play. We know they are well coached and we know they know our strengths and weaknesses.
“The first two sets were razor thin with each team taking turns holding the lead. Just a few key plays down the stretch allowed us to take the sets. What we did get to watch was two of the best players in Suburban One, Olivia Szymkiewicz and Pennsbury's Madara Bungs, play a game of power volleyball. As a fan of volleyball it was exciting. As a coach, however, the edge of my seat was worn out.”
Next up: North (7-2, 9-5 overall) will visit Central Bucks South for a matchup at 6:30 pm Monday.
