Sophia Wang – Rutgers University (Cheerleading)
Major: Business Management
Final list of colleges: Rutgers, University of Connecticut, Michigan State, Minnesota, Drexel, Penn State
Reasons for choosing Rutgers: “The school ranks #41 nationally. It has a great network with employers, the major I’m in is one of best at this school, the team feels like second family, and it just feels like home.”
What was the progression that led you to continuing your cheer career at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about collegiate sports during the end of my sophomore year. Our program at the high school had just gotten new coaches, and I was able to progress a lot during that year. It was also when I first started attending college clinics. Cheer is less recognized than the other sports, so recruitment was tough and confusing as it felt like I was late to the process compared to everyone else, and no one could really help me. Recruitment for me started around the beginning to middle of my senior year.”
Coach Breanna Terman: “Sophia not only excels academically but has inspired us through her talent, discipline, and heart of a true captain. She is an outstanding athlete whose journey has elevated our cheerleading program and will leave a profound impact for future classes. She is a three-time UCA All-American, two-time Suburban One All-League athlete, 2024 Pocono Regional Champion, 2025 Suburban One Champion, and NHSCC semifinalist and finalist, to name a few.
“The road to this day has not been easy. At some points throughout her journey, it was just a dream. With determination, resilience and passion, Sophia invested in her skills and her own recruitment process. While focusing on academics, extracurricular activities and lead role of captain, she attended multiple college clinics and made relationships with athletes from other programs. This led to her discovering her passion for co-ed cheerleading at Rutgers University. Sophia has led by example, encouraged her teammates, and uplifted those around her, reminding us that greatness isn’t just measured in achievements but in character.
“Your teammates and coaches are so proud of you and all of your hard work. Congratulations, Sophia.”
